I find that I enjoy a hobby much more if I see results in the form of points or experience. Merchants implementing a points system are more attractive to me. World of Warcraft is fun for me even when gearing my charater. This is because I can see the results when I get a new piece of gear. I played Diablo 2 when it first came out. For the longest time, I only played single player. I enjoy the grind in the game when I literally see the new equipment, experience, and finances.
I also play games like Rock Band more than I play real instruments. This is because I can see the points at the end of a song, and I can literally see when I get better. I try a lot harder at a game like that. If there is no room to grow in a game, I generally lose interest. It's fun to "gold star" games in Rock Band. The game has been very healthy for me. It has assisted my vocal talent. It has also helped me learn coordination with drumming. I can drum on a real drum kit now.
When I played Diablo 2 online, I lost interest because of people cheating. People ruined the game because there is always non-legit ways of getting ahead. To be able to play the game, you had to cheat to succeed.

I will have to agree with you on the point system, it does push you further. I can also agree with you on D2 played online. Sad thing is there will always be a cheater when there is always someone else better than them at something..It is sad.
