Check the dollar store first

When I go out shopping for specific things I like to go by the dollar store first to see if they have what I am looking for before I go pay possible 2-3 times as much at say Walmart or the grocery store. Like today for instance. I wanted to get a few little waste baskets for by the computer and in the living room. I got ones that were plain white and nice enough for $1 each at Dollar Tree. I would have had to pay a lot more at Walmart.
Do you check the dollar store first or do you just go straight to a regular store?

With me and my frugal ways, we do alot of shopping at the dollar stores. Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Big Lots. They have just about everything you could think of and even if something doesn't work out or it breaks, it was only a buck, instead of 5 or 6 dollars.

I like the idea of buying something for only a dollar especially when it cost more somewhere else. After all we are all trying to save some money and every little penny helps especially at those little dollar shops. It is okay to be frugal. There isn't a lot of money to go around these days with the way the world is and the economy.

Yes, I always check the Dollar Store. I have one right by my house so its very convient for me. I was able to make Valentines really special for my sons Valentine parties at school because the Dollar Store had everything I needed. It really helps you save money now that the economy is the way it is. I am able to make my dollar go alot farther.

I love the dollar store. We have ahuge on near us. I always check there before going to other places. I always get my disposable aluminum pans for baking cakes and takingthings to church events or reunions and I don't worry about gathering them to take home. I lose a lot less dishes that way! LOL

I love our local dollar stores, we're lucky to have a couple of them in our area. They certainly help to stretch the budget. I've actually found a few cleaners that are unscented and work better that most of the 'designer' (and several times more expensive) cleaners available elsewhere.

The dollar tree is a great place to find deals. Ours in town has great prices even on arizone ice tea, sunny delight and just so many more. Me & my mom go there about once a month just to save some money before heading to our weekly walmart trip for buying groceries. The dollar tree is a great way to sve money. Have you ever heard of the old time pottery barn? that place is a also a great place to shop for home deocrating ideas. You can buy birthday bags for very cheap around 39-89 cents usually. Also after holidays they offer 75 % off there holiday decorations that are already 1.00 to probably 20.00 dollars. Great prices are at both of these stores.

I go to the Dollar Tree first too if it is something I think they might carry. Ours is very near Walmart so you can make the stops easy . They are now putting frozen foods in ours. I have bought some frozen food from another one and it was really good. I liked the shrimp and the chicken sandwiches and also the twice baked potatoes and they are all alot more in the grocery store!

From time to time I do go check out the Dollar Store for bargains over a reg. store, but since we do not have a Big dollar store near us, it is sometimes hard to get to one. But I was just at a Huge Dollar Tree this last weekend when I was out of town and I was able to stock up on Deodrant and Shower gel. These are items I really hate to have to pay a lot for for sure.

That is one nice thing about moving back to the city. They are all over the place. I actually forgot to grab my son his body spray yesterday so I have to go back and get that today. It is like Axe, but it is only a buck and it smells great.

We have a lot of 99 cents store back here in California. I always go there for some items that I think they have. Wal-Mart over here doesn't grocery, bu household items or other stuff. I love go shop at 99cents store more often than anywhere else because they have what I need

I haven't been to a 99 cent store in a while. I didn't realize they had a lot of them in California. I was never there. I think those dollar stores can have a lot of nice cleaning supplies and other things that you might need in a pinch. They have things that work just as well and are a little cheaper then some of the higher end retail places.

It depends on what I am buying. If it is something that I think the dollar store will have then yes I do check there first. I will actually go to the dollar store from time to time just to see what they have and buy whatever I might need or want from there. Sometimes you can find really good deals at the dollar store.

I agree with your reply. Sometimes it might depend on what you are looking for. Sometimes you just can't find a certain something in a dollar store that you can get in a department store.
It does not hurt to check the dollar store. You never know what they could have that would end up surprising you.

I love the dollar store! I just don't go in often, because I will come home with a bunch of stuff I don't need. But they do have some very good things that you would find for much more money at other stores.
One thing I always buy at the dollar store is gift wrapping supplies, especially those gift bags that can be $3-$5 elsewhere. Once I even found a set that includes a matching gift bag, tissue paper, wrapping paper, and tags--enough to wrap 2 gifts beautifully--for $1 (I think that was at Dollar Tree, actually).
I have a recipe for some mini-cupcakes that require the small cupcake wrappers, which can be up to $3 for a package, and I was able to buy them for $1 at the dollar store by my house, until it closed a few months ago. (Not the Dollar Tree, they're still around.)
I'm a little leery of buying food at the dollar stores, I think it is probably alright, but I just question when it is some brand I've never heard of. I have bought some soaps and things like that, though, and they are just fine. And I have bought food on occasion when it is a brand I know.
Hmm now I want to go to the dollar store, I think I know where I'm going tomorrow!

I also walk out with more than I planned on sometimes. I resisted buying several things yesterday that I did not really need, but wanted to get. That stuff can add up if you just go grabbing stuff. I love getting gift bags there too. Oh and the big things of white tissue paper. I used tissue paper all the time to pack my eBay boxes.

Oh yes, I forgot about tissue paper. I always buy that if I see it at the dollar store, because it is so expensive anywhere else. Sometimes they even have colored tissue paper, not that it would help with your packing, but I love it for gifts, and it is usually even more expensive than white paper.
I am glad you mentioned ebay, as I it reminds me I need to sell some things, too, so I'll have to see what I can find at Dollar Tree to help with that.

I always check the Dollar stores or in my case Euro stores first. Nine times out of ten I find what I need at a bargin price. I have done it too many times before to buy something and then only to find it at a fraction of the price in the Dollar store and then kick myself afterwards.
So now I also make a point to check the Dollar stores first and also surpise myself in the amount I can save.
In this day and age every penny counts.

I think it is a good idea to check out the dollar stores first. You never know. You might be able to find something nice at the dollar store before you spend too much elsewhere like a big department store.
You are really right. Evey penny counts.

I frequently check into what the dollar or discount stores have but it really depends what I'm looking for. There are certain things I think you just shouldn't get at the dollar store. You get what you pay for and the quality usually isn't that great so you end up needing more in the long run. I'd rather pay the 4 or 5 dollars for some items and not have to replace them. But that's a select few number of items. The great thing about dollar and discount stores is that you can find ANYTHING in there. It may surprise some people the different things you can get at the dollar store

I have a tendency to agree with your statement here. There are some things that are not meant to really be bought at those dollar stores. You just have to go somewhere else and pay more for the quality or quantity that you really want.
There are some household items and clothing that I would rater buy elsewhere than at the dollar stores.

If I think at all that the dollar store has what I want,,then thats where Im going!
Why pay more if you dont have to, I find the dollar stores here are also getting more brand name stuff for $1. The only problem is, I tend to go in looking for the one thing on my list and come out with 20 others!

I sure do! I used to think it was "too much bother" to go to different stores but there are three dollar stores in my town, two right near the grocery stores and pharmacies so it's stupid NOT to check there first. I've found things like shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotions, all that stuff is half the price or less of what I'd pay elsewhere for the same exact thing. Cleaning and paper products are less too.

Actually it depends sometimes. I do like the department stores but I have found many a bargain at the dollar store. Sometimes you can get the same value at a dollar store as you would in a higher end type of retail or department store.
I think that I would rather buy clothes at a department store though. Those dollar stores can really save you money with lots of other things.

I will always go into Poundland (UK version!) before I go anywhere else. There is sometimes some amazing offers on which you would never find in supermarkets.
There is always chocolate and sweets on offer as well which is good for my brother and his friends when they come round to our house.
There are some things that are better cheap!

Oh my goodness...if I didn't have a Dollar Store or it's relation, I'd be so broke. Whenever I need something, I always head down to the $1 store first and foremost. One of the biggest insentives for me for doing this is because it's a lot closer to me than Wal Mart or Target.
Now, there are things I'd go to the regular stores for first and that can't be helped.

Shopping these days has become almost a chore for me. I have to think about the best way to spend my dollar. As a previous employee of a dollar store I am fully aware of the deals. I go to the same store I used to work at not only because of the lower prices but also since dollar stores are somewhat smaller stores, the employees have a better chance to get to know you on a more personal level. I don't just go in, get what I need, and leave. I have time to catch up with friends. It much more relaxed and slow paced. I don't find myself getting mad because I can't find what I need or frustrated because there is no one to help. I don't get angry at the long lines and slow check-outs. I have the luxury of thinking about what I need and getting it. It's practically stress free.
On the downside, there are those times when there is definitely a better deal somewhere else. It happens. If it didn't, how would the store make any profit. Maybe they charge more for a pack of pens, a set of bedsheets, or a box of cereal. The customer service far exceeds any slightly high price any day. I may be slightly biased but I know for a fact, more than half the time a thrift store is going to be your best bet.
