how the earnings work? just saying things or having others respond?

Hey I wanted to know if you create 3 700+ word discussions like I did and noone responds to them how do I make 1 cent. This made me really mad I spent probably 1 hour and 30 minutes expecting to make good money and made 1 cent. If this is how things work i am going to quit so can someone explain to me is it a long discussion alone that makes the money or is it if people respond to your discussions?
