Has anyone else noticed an increase in scams lately?

In the past couple of weeks we've had a few different scam attempts tried on us both personally and in business. One was a fake cashier's check scam to purchase some furniture from our business. They wanted to send us a cashier's check for about $2,000 more than the piece they were buying and then have us cash that check and forward the extra $2,000 to their "Shipper" before their shipper came to pick up our items. Common enough scam from what we've read online, but we've gotten it from 3 different emails on different products we sell in the past 2 weeks. The other scam was a check we recieved in the mail with the lottery scam. They send us a check and told us that we'd won a lottery. We just needed to cash the check and then send them the taxes that we owed to claim our prize. Again, typical scam from what I've read.
Just curious to know if somehow we ended up "targets" or if there's been an increase in this type of stuff? Is it increasing due to people becoming more and more desperate and therefore more likely to fall for it? Has anyone out there fell for these scams before?

Oh yes and I am beginning to think it is not only to try and get money out of people but i think it is an addiction with some people, I belong to a game called Yoville ans the scamming that goes on in there and it is only a game with no real money involved, I can't believe people try to scam people in a game...
