Chinese scientists measured the length of the Yangtze River, China's longest river, and found that it is 80-some kilometers shorter than believed. The new measurement, made with remote sensing technology, shows that the river is 6211.3km long, while the widely accpeted length is 6300km. But it is still the 3rd longest river in the world. It does not mean the river shortened. This is the result of the improvement of measuring techniques and different starting and ending points.

Advancement in measuring equipment technology make the differences possible, it shouldn't be a surprise after all.

Interesting. Perhaps the dramatic difference in measurement is due to the more sophisticated technologies available to make measurements. Did you ever think about the drastic difference being due to global warming? If the arctic ice is melting and filling the oceans... Maybe the ocean tide has covered some of China's coastline?
