I have an wireless mouse and it's not behaving very well lately. I'll point to something and it will suddenly jump to another place on the page. I changed the batteries and it still did it. I thought maybe the batteries were old so I bought some new ones and it still jumps around! Any ideas what could be wrong? Do they wear out, might I need a new one?

It could be the surface of which the mouse is on. Try getting a mouse pad or try it on a different surface. And if that doesn't help you may need to replace it.

I did not think that it might be the surface-I have a cheap plastic mouse pad that is very slick. I will turn it over and try the mouse on the more resistant rubberized back. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you so much, smithsps!! My mouse has not jumped around since I turned my mousepad over and have it on the non-slick surface! You've certainly made my day!

No problem, I am glad to help. The laser that the mouse uses, bounces off the surface and back into the mouse. It detect movement, by detected changing of the surface. And if it is a slick surface, the surface barely changes so it has trouble detecting if you moved. That doesn't make much sense, and I can't seem to word it correctly. -Smithsps

That's going to happen with either a wireless mouse or a regular mouse. It's my understanding that there's nothing you can do about it. It's just one of those things. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Actually, all that was needed was a decent mouse pad! I was using a cheap, slick pad and the "eye" didn't know where to go. So I hauled out my old, plain mousepad and that fixed it. Hooray!!

It could be that it is coming defective. Did you have the same problem when you had a regular mouse? If that is the case, you might have a Trojan and a hacker is controlling it. It also depends on when it happened. If it started to go wrong after you downloaded a new software program, it could be that someone sneaked a virus in it, at which you will have to remove that program and do a virus scan. However if this is not what happened, you will need to replace your mouse, and maybe get a different kind for instance if it is an optical, get a laser mouse since the latter are almost self-contained and the hole at the bottom is very small.

I did a virus scan plus an adware scan just yesterday and haven't downloaded anything lately. I really, really hate to spend money on a new mouse! This economy is really hurting me, like it is everyone else, but at least a mouse isn't as expensive as it used to be. Maybe, if I need a new one, I can find a deal somewhere. Geez, expenses never seem to stop! Thanks so much for replying and for your constructive advice!
