I suddenly lost the knack for making good coffee. I don't know what happened. I would enjoy a cup of coffee now and then but it has become, that the coffee I make is unbearable. I would like to enjoy a cup of home brewed coffee but it always tastes like some kind of old, stale grinds with muddy tepid after taste. It doesn't stay hot and turns chilled instantly! I run to the nearest coffee shop every chance I get. Has anyone had any luck making a decent cup of coffee? What is the trick?

I just use a coffee maker and make sure that the water is very hot. I do the same with instant coffee. I use flavoring, sugar, and even mix the coffee with cocoa. What brand do you use? Maybe that could be the problem. I sometimes use flavored coffee that I get from Ebay or use Kona brand. For instant, it's Foldger's.

I have tried over ten - twenty brands and nothing has worked at all. I am convinced that it is the coffee machine but it was very expensive so I don't understand it. Is it recommended to put hot coffee into the machine pre-brewing? because I always put in cold water?

I use warm water. As for a coffee machine, some cost as low as $9.99. Have you considered using any of those?

You don't say how you make your coffee, but try cleaning the equipment out with hot vinegar and water to remove old oils and sediment that build up and make your coffee taste bad. We received a Bunn coffeemaker for Christmas that brews coffee in three minutes flat and the coffee tastes so much better! It is a good investment for coffee lovers. My friend had a Bunn that lasted for nine years before it quit on her, so they are not so expensive if you consider how long they last. Also, invest in a "Coffee Butler" (about $30 new) to keep it hot in, instead of leaving on the burner. They will keep your coffee hot and fresh for several hours.

I tried cleaning out the coffee maker but it didn't really help. The coffee maker I use though has a very strange container system that retains about four cups of water after every brew, so the left over water gets used the following morning. It is very unusual, I am not sure that this is normal. In order to empty the water out the entire machine has to be lifted upside down and this is very difficult to do because the machine weighs about twenty pounds. The bunn sounds like a good idea, does it retain water?

The trick is to give it time and care while preparing. Don't prepare it when you're in a rush, rather treat it with respect and you'll find it taking good care of your nerves and taste buds.

OK, the first thing is, I found out thaqt the best tasting coffee at home is buying columbian. I always wondered why the coffee you get at restaurants are always great and the coffee you make at home is sometimes great. Obviously, I'm sure the correct measure of water and coffee has something to do with it, but I just noticed that even if a store brand or off brand has columbian type, get that. second, I don't know what kind of coffee maker you have; mine has a steel carafe. If yours does, or maybe even if you have a glass one, while you're putting coffee in the filter, have hot water sitting in the carafe. This will heatr it up and it will keep your coffee hot longer.
