Do you forget names of people, places etc.?

We all do sometimes. But some people never seem to remember new ones. Lately I find my mother forgetting very often where she has kept "things" etc. So she shows us the place before keeping important papers and items, so that we remind her incase she forgets. She feeds her cell ph. with the reminders of important tasks, appointments etc. What I feel bad about is seeing her discomfiture when suddenly she meets someone while shopping and unable to recall the person's name. How do you ascertain that this has become a problem and needs cure?

There are times when my memory falters. It's mostly the telephone numbers that I forget. But there was one instance when I forgot a really very important thing, my car. Imagine, I went home riding a public utility vehicle thinking that I never brought my car. It was really bad.

Too manytelephone numbers are hard for everyone to remember initially. Thats not much of a "problem", I think! The car incident is very unique but if it happened only once and you didn't repeat it, then its still okay. It was very strange though. Thanks for the response dorisday!

I thinks there is nothing to worry about.I don't know whats her age,but young people also do the same.May be the reason is people are so busy with many things that they forget about some of them.Secondly we forget things which are not very important for us.As u wrote ur mom forget names of people she meet.but i am sure she cannot forget her best friend's name if she come across her or she cannot forget name of a buddy she often talks to. Why we forget to do the homework, but we don't forget to study if we have exam the next day? Why we forget to take medicines, but we do not forget to take lunch. why we don't forget our own room, why we don't sleep in anybody else room because of forgetting. the only reason is we know that different things have different level of importance....

I hope so too kherasakshi. Thanks for thinking so positive. She is 43 years old. Never. She will never forget her best friend's name. Infact she is the fastest one to recollect long lost friend's,favourite places, childhood incidents, even the route leading to her favourite places. She is also very sharp and excellent in G.K. But only lately these day to day occurings made me think so. There is so much truth in your sentence----different things have different level of importance. Yes,yes, she was never known to attach great importance to finance related matters, hence the reason of forgetting important papers. But I hate to see her struggling to recollect people's name, mainly new acqaintainces. Thanks a lot for such a nice and heartening response.

I do sometimes have issues with names of people, but this is more because of the foreign aspect of my location at the moment. It is easy for me to forget names of people when they are often in formats I can't even pronounce! lol. Usually though, I am quite good at remembering names, numbers and things like that. One thing I've always recalled well are voices. I can have someone call me after many years and instantly know who it is just by the sound of their voice. As for your Mum, it's an unfortunate aspect of getting older I guess. It's good though that she is getting into the habit of using her cellphone for reminders etc. I can imagine that it's frustrating for her too, but at least these activities will help her with her memory.

That is quite understandable James. Those tongue twisters kind of names. Even Indian names are quite hard for many. I can imagine your plight. My goodness!! You can recall voices. This is sure a gift James!! It means you can recognise a ph. caller if you meet him in person? Fantastic!! Yes, its quite frustrating but as you mentioned, she is trying to be even more organised to lessen it. Thanks for the response.

I used to have a very good memory, but these days, my memory's not so great anymore. It a sign of growing older, I guess. It is especially so where remembering people's names is concerned. I can usually recognize people and their faces, and know when and where I have encountered them before, but it is not always easy for me to remember their names. When I go on holidays, I also have problems sometimes remembering places I have visited...names of parks, buildings, tourist spot and attractions, etc. so what I do nowadays is to snap the names appearing on signboards on my digital camera so I don't have to try and remember them. It helps my recollection of the places when I come back and review the photographs taken on the trip. My mother-in-law who is 88 years old lives with me, and her memory is absolutely bad. Her memory span can be as short as 10 minutes, and sometimes she will ask the same thing over and over again because she cannot recall the answer we last gave her a while back. She also cannot quite remember who some of her friends are. It is quite embarrassing sometimes when they can remember her, but she cannot remember them. When you're that old, it is hard to cure ailments like memory loss or dementia although you can try and take some medication to slow down the process of the problem.

I always having problem in identifying names of a person especially if not all the time I see her/him.. Sometimes, I used to keep on asking their names since I can't remember exactly their names.. When I was in my practicum before, I always used to bring my seat plan so that when I want to call my student to answer my question for recitation, I can easily call them by looking at the seat plan..But after the class, when they're going to talked to me I can't remembered their names and I need to asked them again.. Sometimes, I felt bad for myself of not knowing my students very well.. I don't know if there's a cure to remember certain things like names.. But I know that there is an illness that cause of forgetting things.. I don't know the exact name of that illness but I have watched it in TV that there is a kind of illness that you would easily forget things until all of your memory is gone already..

Hey kissie! Nice name! Sounds quite common. The reason might be in different things having different level of importance for people.

Hi daffodil! It is not uncommon for people when they get older to not be able to remember things like they once did. I know that sometimes I forget things that I normally wouldn't. I don't know exactly why this happens and have spoken to my doctors about it. Sometimes this can happen to women when they are menapausal or post-menapausal. The change in hormones can throw a woman's body completely out of kilter. So it can be something that is sort of easily explained. If it is bothering you then you should speak to your mom's doctor. It may not really be anything that serious.

Hi Opal!! Nice to see you!! Age can be a factor. She is 43 years old. She is not menopausal. I too hope this forgetfulness is the common one. Though it is quite recurrent. Thankyou my dear Opal.

Hi, Yes that happens to me a lot as well. I think its may be becoz i meet a lot of people and it gets difficult to remember everyone. I dont forget faces to easily bu with names yea i dont remember many. I have heard we shd always do some brain teasers to keep our memory sharp. One of such exersixe is not saving yr friends name in yr cell phone. By doing this when u c the number u have to recall whose number it is. And also if u want to call yr friend u have to remember the number. Try such small exersixes. Its worth trying it. Cheers, Tutul

Hello,Dffodils! In old age usually people tend to forget things. In that case you give your mother diets sweetened with honey because honey is beneficial in decreasing anxiety and improving memory during aging. However I am not forgetful. My memory is very sharp even now at the age of seventy.thanx.

Honey is a natural product and harmless. I'll encourage her to take honey regularly. Thanks bbsr.

Hi Daffodil. Well, some people are only distracted but if you feel that your mother really have a problem better see the doctor. I think that some tablets of phosphate can solve her problem. Stress can do this as well and she will need a vacation out of the problems. About forgeting names many people do this or call us for the wrong name LOL. I had a friend that when wanted to call someone she called all the names from who she knew before call the right name and she was young LOL. Have a good day friend.
