Hard Winters

This winter has been one of the hardest for wildlife in my area in quite awhile. We had many weeks of temperatures that hit more than -20 and also had a large amount of snow early in the season. This isn't abnormal for this area, but as I said, we've had many years recently that were milder than normal. I started feeding deer outside my home office this winter. It's been pretty interesting over the winter to watch them and actually start to recognize certain ones as "regulars". I don't have any special stories about any of them, but was wondering if anyone else out there does. How tame do these things actually get if you keep inviting them to your sidewalk?

funny you mention this today. last night on the news i saw a piece on coyotes bothering a dog not too far from here. i have not heard of coyotes in this part of ontario (caanda) (we are in southern ontario) but because it has been so cold and we have so much snow, i guess they are out hunting for food in different places than before.

It's always kind of interesting when they break their normal areas and patterns. A few years back we had a huge number of Great Horned Owls in the spring. They normally don't come this far south (central MN), but that year we had hundreds of them. It was pretty cool to see.
