Before we have internet we only rely on standard phone and then internet service using Dial Up then come DSL, a high speed internet service that share with our telephone line, after that Cable internet come along, FIOS, Satellite and Stand Alone Internet that does not require phone line or other services associated with it.
This changes is very helpful to our daily needs, but their is one good thing about Internet service now, the age of voice over internet protocol, before we need phone lines to have internet service, now you can have telephone lines using your internet service, by means of internet we can now place and received phone calls anywhere in the world as long as we are able to connect the phone adapter our VOIP company provide us.
Way back we already start using VOIP, one good example is voice chat, text chat , using yahoo messenger or msn.
With all the beauty given by VOIP service, there is also some disadvantages, like you can use it during power failures or if you don't have internet connection, but they said that they have a back up feature for that which is you can have your incoming calls transfer to an alternate phone during those instances like your mobile phones.
Standard phone, will work same as VOIP phone, but with standard phone you will be able to receive collect calls if you have not block it with your provider, you have to pay extra for additional calling features like caller id, call waiting whatever feature you wish to have, with VOIP company they will give you up to 25 calling features for free with no additional cost.
More and more people now are switching to VOIP service, but I must say that it is really depends on what you need, If you run a small business and do a lot of long distance calls or most of your family member lives in a different country like CANADA and you wish to call them often then VOIP is for you.
If in any case you really don't call a lot and you have no use of internet service at home and your phone bill is up to the roof them you have to think twice which is better and less expensive.
Remember this service provider wish to provide us service because we are willing to pay for it but you must also need to make the right choice which is better and what you really need.
Since I physically located in ASIA and my relatives is in New York, they have decided to subscribe a VOIP for me so that I call them anytime and they can reach me as often as they want. I also maintain a Standard Phone for local purposes because this VOIP company that we have don't provide any other number aside from U.S. tel numbers.
Which service do you think is better, VOIP or Standard phone service? I must say VOIP works for me because I and my family need it, but if in our country has a VOIP service provider I will definitely switch over.

Take note that you can't have the 99.99 percent reliability of landline on voip services. VoIP on an average has around 95 percent reliability. Meaning 5 out of 100 calls (incoming or outgoing) will not connect. I guess thats a low price to pay for the savings you get. For instance, I save around $20 a month for using Onesuite.com VoIP service (my VoIP provider) instead of my local phone provider.
The 5 percent I lose for reliability is acceptable for the money I save in a month. Anyways, you can get a VoIP number in the US (NY) so your folks in New York can call you without paying long distance fees.
