Sherlock Holmes is famous for those who like detective story. But for those who don't like detective story perhaps will say who the hell he is. It is normal though. For example: people who don't know economics are asked about who is Amartya Sen will have no idea about that.
I personally know Sherlock Holmes becase I like watching detective Conan series.

I am french and when we think of a detective we directly think about sherlock holmes, in the comprehensive school, we all must read a book of conan doyle.
For me, Sherlock Holmes is a very very famous personnage!!!

he's famous, i believe.
he is said to be the best detective of all time if i'm nit mistaken.
but i also have the same experience of yours. when i told sherlock holmes' story in class, my trainer seems to be wondering and he told me he don't know him. :c

I don't read sherlock holmes novel till I am in university, but I know that he is one of fiction detective from a detective novel because I watch sometimes on TV of read review in magazine of newspaper.
