Are the best records just as good as a complete book?

I was thinking the other day, a good record. What would define the good record? That's a lot of answers right there, but i think a good record should be just as entertaining as a good book, a good movie, a nice piece of art, a good article in the newspaper etc. Who has peaked such heights, many individual answers probably. But which albums are doomed to be a classic? Let Me Start: Marvin Gaye - Whats Going On. Political, personal & never goes out of date. Soul with high complexity, deep and personal. The melodies stands to the lyrics, it's different & still commercial. I just can't find a record to compare with this one. Therefore i think it's a classic. Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life. Complex and different. Has loads of songs in it and reminds me of a itunes playlist. Still it shows how it was living that life, the whole album has a red thread around it. The melodies & the lyrics goes hand in hand, it is interesting from beginning to the end. "Loves in need of love" is a great opening track and takes the focus to what it's all about. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly. Wow, if i could write an album i could dance, shout, sing, cry and make love to at once. This must be it. The deep insight in bass playing and drums are way above normal. It's all wrapped up in the political and street wise lyrics. It tells about the time it was made, and also about the time we're living in. The subjects never grow tired. The world can't live without this record. Loads more of records i would put in this list, but this is my three best soul records through the times.

Hi there , I sure agree that best records are as good as a complete book , both forms are art and they both influence a lot ,a great music record actually can cross many barriers and can be even enjoyed by the one who hate reading. There are many more great records , i love to listen to Louis Armstrong- What a Wonderful World...thats a cool track i listen to when i am really down. Do put up other tracks , i would love to listen to the others as well. cheers

Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World is very important and sort of feeds out the essence of life. A hymn for humanity i think. I love it. There are a lot of good records and singles from that time. Similar Good Albums: Billie Holiday - Billies Blues Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning Burt Bacharach - Hit Maker!: Burt Bacharach Plays His Hits Songs like these are rare, and the similar albums i have posted are different and stand as milestones in itself.

I would go as far as to say a good record is better, when I listen to certain songs such as for example Unintended by Muse (amongst others) I get a feeling that I have never managed to get reading books.

I see where you want to go. But all music is objective. But some albums go further behind the objective line, they stand like milestones of the past. Even if i don't like the musical content i must admit they are good. Take Madonna - True Blue. I just can't stand the concept of this album. But it is a classic and were very important of the time it as in. I want you to write about the album as a concept that you agree on. Objective or not, it doesn't matter, the important part is what you feel about it.
