Trouble with kidneys and Diabetes

I have been told that I have a little trouble with my kidneys, I am taking some medicine for that, but the question is how come? I am not a drinker and I do not think having wine at communion every two months, or a small glass of wine at Christmas, New Years, and birthdays count either. I heard it has to do with protein, but if that is the case, does it mean that I cannot eat any protein at all, or I have to go entirely vegetarian? I did have a cousin or an uncle who had kidney trouble and from what I heard he was a fine outstanding man, non drinker like me, etc. So is the trouble with the kidneys are just a result of my diabetes and how can I make it so that I get better and not worse?

Too much protein can affect your kidneys, that's why people get sick when they go on the Atkins diet. But not really knowing how a diabetic should eat, I can't advise much. It's not good to go totally vegetarian, I don't think, but watch the protein amounts in what you eat. I read somewhere that protein should make up 10-15% of your daily nutrition but no more. Eat lots of vegetables and some fruit, too, lots of fiber. Too much protein overworks the kidneys!

Boy the Reader's Digest medical misinformation strikes again.you are sooooo wrong.I have been eating Low carb for 7 years and I have the healthiest kidneys going. The real issus is insulin, which is very destructive. So when you are an uncontrolled diabetic before the diagnosis, the insulin swing is taking it's toll on the body. Too much protein is only bad if you already have bad kidneys, it does not cause it. Here is one such study http://www.benbest.com/health/kidney.html and there are many more like it. http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/03.13/09-kidney.html

Thanks for showing me those articles. I can see that, as usual, there are two points of view! I'd be more inclined to think that protein wasn't harmful since we've always been carnivores. But I'm still in favor of a balanced diet. btw, that food pyramid thing is wacky. With all those carbs it's based on it's no wonder we're a fat nation. I don't think it's healthy to cut out as much of them as Atkins does but we sure don't need all those servings per day, at least I don't.

I tried the Atkins diet for a couple of weeks when it first came out. I got very cranky and then gave it up.

Even doctors don't agree as to how much protein is damaging to kidneys, but diabetics often have kidney trouble. Those who don't have diabetes (like me) can have kidney disease, too, so it may not be coming from that. The most important thing to protect your kidneys is to make sure your blood pressure is normal or even a little under, and to avoid or at the least, minimize things like nitrates, salts and artificial flavorings and colors. My doctor advises me to drink plenty of clear liquids and keep caffeine to a minimum (one to two servings a day. Becoming a vegetarian would probably damage your health more than help it, but if you eat a lot of red meat, be advised that your body can build up too much iron, which can settle in main organs and cause problems. The reason is that as kidney damage progresses, the kidneys lose the ability to create a particular hormone that releases iron for the body to use.

Thanks for "best response." If you find yourself tense with rising blood pressure, drink a glass of Concord grape juice or eat a few stalks of celery. Either one will bring it back down in a short while.

I have trouble with my blood pressure. If I worry it goes up, I guess I have to be the calm collected person for it to be normal and it does not matter if I am overweight, obese, or not, if something bothers me, up it goes.

Yay.. i'm experiencing the same thing.. at the age of 23, i've got diabetes already and the doctor said that there's a little problem in my kidney but not as bad as other kidney cases.. the doctor advised me not to eat red meat(pork, beef, chicken), junkfoods, salty foods, etc.. i'm really following his advise as i wanted my diabetes and kidney to be treated immediately.. in fact, i've seen a great improvement in my sugar.. i have a glucose meter and i get normal readings most of the time like 80-120.. after eating i get 130-160..

The last time I went to the doctor, my kidneys were fine, my blood pressure was fine, but my sugar was up. I contribute that to my birthday being on the Feb, 25 and celebrating. I am also looking for some recipes with sugar substitutes and am getting into going low carb. I will not be going vegan though. I am more an omnivore mixed everything.

The problem with your kidneys is probably related to your diabetes. It is common for diabetics to have kidney trouble, and often end up on dialysis to help them. I am not sure what you can do to help it except be sure to drink plenty of water to help flush out your kidneys. I would recommend talking to your doctor to find out what you should or should not do to help your kidneys function properly.

Personally I really think those of us who are Diabetic have no control of what we do, unless we just do the Best to take care of ourselves as well. For me, I use a natural product besides my Insulin that I think has helped to keep other things from happening as well. I will be Praying for you for the Best with this, but just learn what you can to help improve on this, and Good things will happen for sure.

Cats kidneys go because of their heavy protein diet. People get gout because of their heavy protein diet. Kidney's dont' have alot to do with drinking -that's the liver. You probably don't have to go completely meat free, but cutting back and eating less red meats won't hurt. The kidneys are affected by diabeties, because the sugar can cause them to fail sooner than later, so by watching your diet with red meats and sugars/starches can't hurt your kidneys.

I have no idea. I would ask my doctor about it. It would be good to find out if there is something you can change in your diet.

i dont really know much about this topic but most expert say that we should drink a lot of water so it will help us digest everything we eat. taking lots of sugar is not the cause of having diabetes but food lover with less water in her system mcan have diabetes..that is onli what i know accdg to what i heard and read. there is a tv commercial here in our country about pineapple juice that help built our immune system and clean our system. maybe u should eat plenty of diff kind of fruits. i also heard thats y we have kidney problem is because of what we eat.. my parent always told me to avoid street foods bcoz those are dirty and could damage our kidney.. dont eat food u dont know where it came from.

I know a lot about this as my husband was a diabetic who had high bp from an early age - in his early 20's. The diabetes affected his heart and the medication that he took for his heart eventually destroyed his kidneys. Another factor could be that kidney disease is hereditary and this could be the reason. I do not think that the protein in urine is indicative of you have to give up eating protein.I have to say that in the early years of diabetes my husband did not keep to any diet ot take care of himself. he would run out of medication and not bother to renew because he felt all right. Of course you can make it better! Take your doctor's advice and if you have any reserve with his opinion then take a second opinion. By right choices you can add years to your life span and you are living in a first world country and trust me, that makes a great difference. The whole point is to make sure that your diabetes is always kept under control. This is a must to prevent any organs from being attacked. Take care
