We have been getting Social Security Survivors Benefits for 4 years now since my husbands death.I have been trying to find a place to live and people do not want to rent to me for one because I have a child and because I I get social security instead of a job.Well the social security is more dependable in a job that could be cut at anytime because of the way the economy is. What do you think?

I do think it is more dependable, but at the same time, they have more trouble getting people to leave if they are on government money. The judges cannot touch it and also cannot set them out on the street. I had a friend that rented houses, and he lost his because they would not leave. He took them to court and they could not touch the money and gave them 120 days to get out. They had already been there 4 months with no rent paid. He could not pay the payments on the house and lost it.

Oh yes they can.I have been evicted because of non payment of rent because I had to pay for repairs twice and put out one other time because the house was condemned.Because I was being put out I needed to not pay her rent the last month because I needed the money to move. She took me to court for it 4 times and the first 3 she was told that I was not to pay her.The last time I was told that I had to pay her and that she can at anytime garnish my social security check for the money. My mom is on social security and was told the same thing.

i would think that was discrimination. that's the sillest thing i ever heard. i think i'd threaten them w/a lawyer, it doesn't cost anything to call one & see what he says. good luck.

You'd think it would be discrimination.A lawyer costs way too much and I cannot get a county lawyer because they say I make too much money.I called landlord tenant commision and was told that people cannot be forced to rent to someone they do not want to.I have to get it in writing that the only reason that they will not rent to me is because of that reason.

Ok,pea brain! i live in Chantilly,VA outside of Washington,DC I was told because I do not have that as a reason for not renting to me and in writing it cannot be discrimination.

i think that is ridiculous!! where do you live? u may have told me but my pea brain----if u don't want to tell me that's o.k. i know a lawyer would be high but if u could just get one to talk to u on the phone u might get some info. i just can't believe they are getting by w/that,

That makes no sense to me..Its a fact you will always have that social security coming in every month.....I have no idea why someone would not want to rent to you for either reason....I do not understand their thoughts at all....

Well, as what i understand some people are just prejudice to others who are living under social security. You are right!! they are more secured if their renters are supported by the government because their money is sure than those employees who maybe tomorrow or the next day, they will have no job? Maybe the owner of that house had another reason that he just keep it to himself. why is like that?

I have found that most people are that way.

I think you have a right to your husbands Social Security and should not let what "others" think bother you at all. Report anyone who refuses to rent to you for this reason to the Housing Authority. Your income is more reliable. Don't let people get you down. Good luck and take care of your child!

I agree with you it is much more dependable. Also you would think that would be discrimination of some sorts to now rent to someone becuase they have a kid and no job. As long as the rent is paid and the place is not being dammaged it should not matter. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi dfollin,i have been there done that.Once i try to rent a seven bedroom house, but they did not want to rent to any body with kids. Here a 7 bedroom house and they did not want to rent to a family .Does that makes since to any body? As long as you can pay the house rent and the bills they should not care. have a very nice day.

that's funny..in my area, they'll rent to people faster with that. they consider it a steady income,so they don't worry about it.especially now.
