Slang words such as hubby instead of husband and then the usually u instead of using the exact word you. Then this is r instead of are. I use these words most of the time while texting because it goes by fast since im not that fast at texting. I even used them once by mistake on a report and the teacher gave it back to me and laughed becaue all the u's and r's were circled but i still received an A.

I think everybody uses slang. It's a short-hand, a way of communicating things quickly and efficiently to others. The only problem with it is that it tends to be community-centric. It's exclusive rather than inclusive. Think about how kids use slang with their peers. Whether they realize it or not, it is a way of communicating with each in such a manner that keeps their parents out of the loop. I think that is why slang is so prevalent among the youth. As they grow up, however, that slang grows up with them. Think the sixty-year old who still says groovy. And yes, they do exist. Most kids today don't even know where the word came from. Slang is the natural evolution of language. As much as I hate it, disrespect is going to become a verb. It irks me no end, but that's language. Language isn't just a tool we use, it is something that shapes the dialogue. Words are more than abstract representations, they have power. And as such, we work to master that power, sometimes by creating new powerful words, thus slang.

I use some (such as hubby or bbq) but I do not 'text speak' in discussions, forums, emails, or anything written even if it is informal. I don't even use text speak in texting because I have a full keyboard type phone - unless I run out of characters, 160 limit per message and I have to convey the entire thought in ONE message due to time issues.

Yes, when I am texting or if I a in a chat room. It does shorten the message but at times I find myself using them in when I reply here, lol. I have to catch myself and use proper language. It is the era and the in thing.
