Acupuncture can really rebuild muscles?

I was watching the MATRIX again yesterday night when I came across the scene where Neo is poked with a lot of needles all over his body. According to Morpheus, they are rebuilding Neo's muscles due to muscle atrophy. So it got me thinking, using acupuncture, it is possible to rebuild muscles that have deteriorated? I mean, muscle atrophy is a condition where the muscles is degenerated. And it is a condition that has no cure. Is it possible to rebuild and strengthen the muscle back to its original strong state?

Yup, but only to a certain extend only ^_^ ONce muscles are degenerated, it's almost practically no way to rebuild them to their original state once again.. WHat acupuncture do, is to increase blood flow to those muscles, making it look fuller and give it some strength.. Other than that, nothing more can be done and there's no miracle for that kind of things.. However one is persistent, they may opt to undergo acupuncture for long periods of time, to see how much it really works ^_^

Hmm... you sound experienced in this. Have you gone through acupuncture before? With more blood flow to the muscles, this will make the muscle stronger? How long does the effect last?

lol =D I have not gone thru it before but i have seen and heard about those effects ^_^ Acupunture has been around for very long time, and they work more on the nerves or maybe acupoints in our body.. Acupuncture is like a therapy of unclotting our blood system at certain parts of the bodu to ensure smooth blood flow.. The effects of acupunture are permanent and it's only really effective when one keeps going back for it ^_^ ANd it's painless too ^_^

I think you answered your own question, ahgong. "And it is a condition that has no cure." I would LOVE to think that muscles could be regenerated so easily, but I know it's not possible. I watched my father, then my sister, die of muscular dystrophy. Their muscles wasted away, including their heart muscles. My mother and I were in close communication with 'The Muscular Dystrophy Association' and they never mentioned muscle regeneration as a potentially viable option, not even in the distant future. If ANYONE would know if something like that was being researched, they would. Oh, how I wish that would work! I hate thinking that so many others are wasting away because there is no cure or "treatment" for muscular degenerating diseases like Muscular Dystrophy.

That is why I am asking. Cos as we all know, TV is suppose to emulate reality. So when I see that on the Matrix, it got me curious. I have heard stories about people getting better from acupuncture. But those are mostly for pain relieve ailments. Never for muscle atrophy. Thanks for sharing your story though, mentalward. It is really an eye opener. I wonder if there are any research being done to prevent muscle dystrophy since we have the whole DNA genome mapped out already.

Yeah... may be one day. One day, the cure will be found!

I can't say for sure, but I have a strong feeling that research is being done on things like that. A lot of money is collected every year here in the U.S. on Labor Day. We have the "Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon" every year and hundreds of millions of dollars are collected every year for research into these dreadful diseases. I'm sure that research is being done in every possible direction. There are something like 40 diseases that fall under the generic name of "Muscular Dystrophy" and I believe they've already found cures for 1 or 2 of them. Research continues. Maybe one day, huh?
