Did you know that you could have a telephone connection service and never have to pay another monthly telephone bill? Another upstart has crashed into the world of telephones, selling calls so cheaply it would seem no incumbent can compete. The magicJack website looks like a carnival, and inventor Dan Borislow can sound like a carnival barker. But his $40 device is selling fast with its promise of a year of unlimited calls anywhere in the United States. Does anyone here in Mylot land use the Magic Jack. Have you heard of this? Would you recommend this? http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/technology/2008/06/06/look-out-vonage-here-comes-magicjack.html THIS IS NOT A REFERRAL LINK NOR A LINK TO A COMPETITIVE SITE.

I bought one of these almost a year ago. I love it. I knew from the website in advance that my area code was not yet available. They have a list under the FAQ's. As soon as my area code became available, they let me change my number for free. If I need to change again there is a charge. It took some tinkering, (they have a repair type download on the site) and in a few minutes it was clear and functional. You do have to have the computer on to make or receive calls which is a drawback. My daughter had it hooked up to her computer which is pretty much always on. I let my father borrow it and he loved it too and he is, shall we say ,quite particular. It was well worth the $40. I'm up for renewal in April and $20 a year or $60 for 5 years-can't beat that!!!

I have wondered about this too. I am always leary of those things that are basically an informercial and I never trust them unless I can try them myself. I don't mind trying new things but I don't have the money now to waste on items that don't work. If this item truly worked well, it would eliminate the need for phone companies and I just can't imagine that.

What's shakin', Chevee! I do not own a magicJack yet but am getting one my next week. When I get it I will give you a call so we can see how well it works. My friend, Nick, who is in India right now uses one to call my co-worker's family, and Shari said it comes in crystal clear. As you know, I am a member of a tele-book club and the cost per week is getting a bit expensive so I've decided to try magicJack to keep my expenses in check. I'll let you know when I have it and we'll both see how it pans out.

My sister has it. I don't think it does much for her. You have to be by the computer to answer. She is always on the go. SO I end up calling her cell. Seems like a waste to me.

I actually bought one of these about 6 months ago. I also had to return it. What they don't tell you is that they might not even have your area code available. So while it may not cost you anything to call someone, everyone you know in your town may be calling long distance to reach you. Family, friends, employers and doctors don't usually like calling long distance to reach you each time. We also found that the thing disconnected us constantly in mid sentence. So after about three weeks of fighting it we returned it for a refund. I am hopeful that they can work out the bugs from this system so I can give it a try again in the future.

I have heard the commercials. I am waiting to see how others respond. I hope one of our television stations does a "does it work" feature about it. I do not know how it would affect my internet, as I get it through the phone company.

Hi Chevee, No, I have not heard of Magic Jack, I don't think they have it in the UK but I'm a bit weary about these things, there must be a catch or some sort. Hugs. Tamara
