What does the number in brackets near your username mean ?

Hi folks, I had a simple question about which I have been trying to figure out for some time now. What does we mean when we see the number in brackets against a user. ? I initially thought that this means the number of posts made by a mylotter. But sometimes I noticed that it did not increase when I made a post.
Also, sometimes I made 3-4 posts and it increased once. Also , does it change also with comments. I am really curious to figure this out, just for fun.

I see the number that is currently in the brackets beside your name (as I post this) is 27. That means you have made 27 posts so far!
Occasionally you may see that number decrease, but only rarely. That usually means that a conversation you started or commented on has been deleted. But again, that happens only rarely. The more you post, the more you see the number go up and up!
