It depends on the fruit cake. Dark fruit cake is very good, but it is rich and you can only have it in small qualities. That is why you have it at Christmas and at weddings. It is the light fruit cake that the stores seem to be pushing that is horrible. It is way too sweet. And to make good fruit cake, you have to add brandy to it. I hate light fruit cake, I mean it is the same as a regular pound cake that you add a bunch of cherries to.

I eat fruitcake sometimes. Not all fruitcakes are created equal though, some recipes are far better than others. I'd never eat one that was purchased from a store or mail order. I don't know what they do to those recipies, but I've never had one of those that I could stand to eat! The fruitcakes that I DO like have always been homemade. Back in earlier times, fruitcakes were popular because they had a long shelf life and could be stored easily back when there was no refrigeration.

I have tasted some dry nasty fruitcakes and some moist delicious fruitcakes. It just depends on who makes them. I like them but I can't eat too many slices because it's sooo rich!

That's totally a matter of opinion! I like fruit cake especially made by my great great aunt's recipe. Now it you want to talk about gross food, in my opinion that includes haggis, sushi, and menudo.
