Too much reality tv?

Australia

Do you think there is too much reality tv now days. I honestly hate watching tv now as all there is is reality shows, cooking shows and things like that. What happened to humor and quiz shows things that the whole family can sit down and watch. Things that make you think. Shows where they dont sell you cheap entertainment and "call to vote". Why on earth would I spend 55c to call and vote for a perfect stranger to get $1 million for something they dont deserve. What is your oppinion? I dont say that I dont watch any reality shows but there is just way to many. How many australian/american idols can there be for god sakes. How many dancing with the stars (I bet untill there is no more stars left)

Oh dont tell me pay tv has them as well. Well thats just great you pay for something that kill your brain cells. And the worse bit is reading statistics on popularity and the top 10 are most likely reality shows.

I was pretty intrigued by reality TV when it first started becoming popular, however, after a few weeks it really started to become old. I think reality TV is just a sad excuse for television because it's really not reality at all. People are put into situations soley created by people that create TV shows to create favorable outcomes. I'd rather watch fiction thanks.

hahah that is so right. Say big brother how is that reality when everything is directed from when they have showers to what they say and eat and do. The only reality show I like is national geographic sort of things, Lions killing zebras, monkey giving birth. That is real not call and vote how many babies she is going to have :)))

I do watch reality tv shows but i am a bit picky about it! i just watch American Idol and Fear Factor..but i do not go out and vote! lol it is a waste of money for me...but i enjoy wactching them..but there are reality tv shows that i do not like watching like the reality ones about the lives of movie stars which shows how bratty and spoiled persons they are! and how rich they are and how much they have and they can buy anyhing tthey want! what is the point? to show they are human after all? lol its crazy. i don't know why they sell.

Hey now....cooking shows rock! Some reality tv does go overboard to the point where I just don't give a hoot. You know....like where they throw 8 people in house together somewhere and film the whole thing. Of course they always add drama to those...sort of like of Jerry Springer. I like the more suspenseful life shows. Sometimes I just want to sit down to The Simpsons and sometimes I feel like Jeopardy. They don't make shows like they used to lol...

Cooking shows... we have so many its not a joke. And its 1 guy cooking something and talking how fun is that. There are others where they have guests and stuff like that but the old fashion cooking shows suck big time only because we have so many of them I could name at least 8 from just 4 chanels (and we have 5 national chanels)

I do think there is tooooooo much reality TV. I guess there are no longer anymore creative people left in this world to think up a good sitcom. Maybe that is why all the old sitcoms are back, like the Cosby's, Full House, Rosanne, etc. People want a nice show they can sit and watch, so they go to the old classics, because that is all there is now.

Those were the good old days when the whole family could sit down and watch the Cosby show or stuff like that

TV has always gone through phases like this. One network will find a type of show that everyone wants to watch, and then it isn't long before the others follow suit. When I was little everything on TV was a western. The cycles have gone through sitcoms, medical shows, game shows, primetime cartoons, and now reality shows. You'd think the networks would figure it out that people like a variety instead of the same type of thing on every station, but apparently not. I wish there were some of the good, old family sitcoms on again. They don't have to be as hokey as "Leave it to Beaver" and some of those were, but the kind that have family values and no swearing or off-color jokes. We haven't watched sitcoms since "Friends" went off the air.

When is this phase going to end its been 7-8 years since all this started. They are using the safe formula but my god this is killing me. Yesterday I sat in the tv room in the dark with the tv off for 1 hour because I swear there was nothing on but reality shows that I dont watch and could not get up to do something better.

• Australia

I love cooking shows, but I hate those Survivor and Big Brother and those Bachelor shows. I wonder what happened to people's imagination. Why can they not just imagine things and write plays like they used to do?" As for American, Australian, Canadian and all those other Idol shows. I can sing, but I am too old to qualify and the voices on those shows have not been set yet. So why praise someone whose voice has not matured?

1% of the people that show up for idol have talent the other 99% are a joke the sad thing is 99% of them think they are good and then they have the whole world to make fun of them. WHY DO THEY DO IT

I do agree that reality television has really taken over this day and age and is everywhere! I especially cannot stand those reality shows like Orange County housewives or whatever it is called and The Bachelor type programs. I think it is filth right on tv and the world has really lost it's morality in terms of acceptable programs. I do like American Idol only because I love watching truly talented people being able to showcase their talents and have an opportunity to follow their dreams and use the gifts they were born with. That is about the only reality television I watch though.

Yeah i hate when i turn on the tv and all there is to watch is these darn reality tv shows. I like to watch actual shows like friends or seventies show. Stuff thats funny or supsense. Half the time though there is more reality on then anything else. The actual shows that i enjoy i may get lucky if it comes on once a week.

Gotta admit, violeta_va, I do watch "Survivor", and enjoy it, and what I enjoy most about it is that I can visually travel to all of these wonderful places in the world, (like now it is Brazil---where my son is) and never leave my couch! I get to see flora, fauna & wildlife that I will never have enough time in this world to see! So it's kinda like watching "National Geographic" with a human twist! Beings that I do not have cable or satellite T.V., we don't have a huge selection, so therefore not many reality shows!

Well survivor and Amaizing race are different as they show something new and interesting I dont religiusly watch them but if they are on then yes i do. But dancing and idol I am sick of them.

Maybe it's the way of the TV they earning money, to show how others react to a situation when they in or to let others prepare of what things to come in the near future.
• Australia
20 Feb 09
Yes it is a great way for tv stations to earn money. Do you know how many people call to vote and how much adds cost.

yes, i agree.. there are too much reality tv shows these days and most of them aren't worth watching.. i must admit that i watch some like amazing race, survivor and top chef to name some.. but i guess those shows are good to watch as there's no money involved..
• Australia
20 Feb 09
Since when there is no money on amazing race and survivor (I dont know about top chef we dont get it in Australia I think) I belive both of them have $1 million prize.

Don't hate me but I L..O..V..E reality tv. Quite honestly, those are the only shows that I watch. I watch Dancing with the Stars and American Idol but am much more hooked on shows like Survivor, Amazing Race and Top Chef. I pretty much never met a reality show that I didn't like and outside of the news that's virtually all that I'm interested in watching. Something about the dynamic of human interaction I think and once you watch an episode or two there are people you like and people that you love to hate. You get hooked to keep on watching tos find out how those people fare.
• Australia
20 Feb 09
I dont hate you. In order for them to keep making those shows someone has to watch them. I dont mind so much Survivor or Amazing race as they show interesting things expecially Amaizing race. But eg Idol (as I am in australia its australian idol in my case) why would I watch people humiliating them self (honestly some people should not try to sing as my neighbours dog sounds better) and then you get people saying all this things about them which is so humiliating. That is what bothers me the most they are using other people to make "good" show.
