Help with hair color

Awhile ago I colored my hair a burgandy color with a store bought hair dye. The redish purple color faded out pretty fast and left me with almost black hair. I want to lighten it up to a light brown but I dont want to use bleach in my hair. I bought lighter colors that are suppost to work on dark hair to make it lighter but the only part of my hair thats changed is my roots the rest of my hair wont change color. I really cant afford to get it done in a salon right now so does anyone have any ideas of what color or anything to use to lighten it up? Ive already used 4 boxes within the past month but they didnt do anything.
