Well it happend again tonight. I cooked pork chops for dinner and my husband gave his pork chop bones to the dogs . The only type of bones I ever give the dogs are the big soup bones . My husband keeps arguing with me that Pork chop and Rib bones are okay for dogs . Well this has been bothering me all evening , so I thought I would put it out here as my first discussion .. maybe you can help me to stop this argument I keep having with the hubby .. Do you give your dogs bones? If you do what type do you allow them to have ?

Chicken and pork chop bones tend to splinter and can get caught in a dog's throat. It is recommended that you NOT give them these kinds of bones. I however, am guilty of giving my dogs pork chop bones on occasion. If the dog doesn't INHALE them he/she should be alright. But if your dog is excitable and tends to wolf down it's food I'd stay away from splintery bones. I personally have never had that problem with my dogs. You also have to wonder though...how did they manage without us back in the days when dogs were wild? I'm sure they ate ribs and ALL! Personally I think dogs ENJOY soup bones a lot more than rib bones because they last longer and have better flavor. Can you both be right?

Hi Cinamongurl, two of my dogs wolf down everything fast ,, or as you say inhale it, lol . The other dog is a picky eater, he eats like a cat . I know that dogs used to eat all types of bones in the wild, but they were not cooked. I'm glad you responded , thank you !

You are right, the big soup bones are very good for dogs, but the pork chop bones break apart in very little pieces when are chewed, so the dog can get damage in the digestive system, be careful, pork bones are as dangerous as chicken bones.

NO NO NO NO!!! The only bones that are okay to give to a dog are the ones you get from a pet store that are made in AMERICA. Any where else they put to many chemicals on the bones that are harmful to a dog. The rib bones, chicken bones, all others you get from food splinter and will get stuck in a dogs throat. Thats what I've always been told by my father and by many dog trainers and its what I've read in many many books.

I fi Had a dog I would give him bones, but ONLY ones from raw meat. If you give animals cooked bones they can splinter and kill the animal.

well in the philippines dogs are always given bones. since i started writing about animal topics online though, i found out that many western dog owners do not recommend giving bones to dogs because of the risks of choking and injury. so far though our street dogs haven't suffered any health problems or accidents

Janmags, here in Mexico dogs are lucky to get anything. Homeless dogs are a big problem here , if they did choke on bones no one would know it ..its really sad . Thanks for your response ..

I give them bones when they are grownup. But I still avoid giving them the sharp ones like those that come from goats. Well i have a rottweiler and she doesn't seem to have a problem masticating any kind of bone. Call them jaws of steel! Also when a dog is puppy, I could give a bone that is very big (so big for them to choke on) like a pork leg bone because the puppy is teething and i don't want my slippers to fall victim!

Hi Jaymeeliz, Thats one of the points my husband brought up to me . Our dogs are German Shepherd dogs , and he says they are big enough to chew the bones. I just don't feel at ease giving them bones unless they are the big knuckle type bone . Thanks for responding jaymeeliz, all responses will be helpful to me

I give my large dog bones of all sorts. My little dogs do not get them. I also hear that raw bones are better to give dogs because they do not splinter. The cooked bones can splinter on dogs. Apparently you can even give your dogs raw chicken bones. I have never given my dogs raw bones though.

Hi lisa , I've heard that also about raw bones. It is safer to give them raw, even chicken bones.I've never given mine raw bones before either thank you for your response !

Yea it's bad news to give your dog any bones that are sharp or that they can splinter, which will cause sharp edges. So pork bones and chicken bones are big no-no's. Choking is a problem, but I think they can also do damage internally after they are swallowed (I heard this, I'm not 100% on this one). I would just avoid table bones all together.

When I lived in the states I would never give my dogs anything but dry food. My outlook has changed a little since I moved to Mexico. Yes, beachstarz, I give my dogs bones, almost any except chicken bones. However, I'm sure that they have both stolen plenty of those in their lives. My doggies are both street dogs at heart and bigger dogs. I do worry though when they eat anything but soup bones and stand by ready to stick my fingers down their throat!

playapal, I know what you mean , that your outlook changes here in Mexico. Our's play with coconuts or a piece of plam bark instead of pet shop toys, and they have a ball! You are also very limited on brands of dog food here , there are 2 brands! Even though none of ours has been injured by eating bones , I'm just not at ease with it .. thanks for the response , and have a good day !

I do not give my dogs any kind of bone at all, but my mother in law gives her dogs all kinds of bones. Even when we go out to eat, she will put the bones in a baggie and take them home. I have no real reason for not giving them bones I just would rather they not chew on them.

Hello beachstarz, Yes, we do give our dog a bone. Chicken bone, pork, beef, and goat bones. He like to chew on them and he even bury them for treats later. I do think dogs can handle to eat bones without choking themselves. It is in their genes and you don't have to teach them. I might be wrong but I guess it depends on the owner. Regards.
