Are torrents safe?

I heard about torrents recently. However I am not sure how to use them? Can anyone help me out? I want to know what are torrents? Are they Safe? What is torrent clients? What is seeding or leeching? what do they meant by ratio?

i have been using torrents for the past two years and never had a problem with virus (of course, my anti-virus software is updated).

not all torrent websites are scam or unsafe but to stay safe it is better to use only popular torrent download sites

I would also add to this discussion that you download and keep running at all times, PeerGuardian. You can find it at Sourceforge.net. It will block anti P2P groups form seeing what you are downloading. As downloading Movies and any other copyrighted material is illegal in most places, you do not want to get caught doing it. For the most part PeerGuardian will keep you safe from discovery.
