Do you belly dance?

I just added this interest, but there wasn't anyone posting. I've not been with Mylot very long so I'll be searching to see if any other groups already exist, but for now who enjoys belly dancing? Do you dance with a troupe? Or do you dance for yourself or in a class? I took a class when I resided in Arizona, but since I've been in Minnesota I've stayed with DVD's. I still feel very much the novice, so any advise is appreciated. Namaste- Anora

I have not personally taken a bellydance class, though I did look into it a few years back when my sister asked me to do a couple of costume pieces for her. It seems like most of the troupes around here are more tribal, and I think I might be more interested in caberet style. I did get a set of Raina's videos, but some of the moves are ones I am not picking up, so I gave up.

I use the dvd's created by Neena and Veena. They are easy to follow and go at a good pace for beginners. That's cool that your sister does it. I love to go the Renn Fest weekend that is all Arab so I can watch the professional belly dancers. Namaste-Anora

Actually, I had one of their VHS tapes, and I don't think it was one of their very basic ones, LOL. I think what got me with that one is they went straight from move to move without introducing it, so when I was first doing it I had NOT clue what it was they just told me to do. I'm not sure if my sister still kept up dancing when she moved - long story. Have you seen the "Shimmy" series on FIT?

Is that the one where they do like a Latin dance to keep fit? If so yes. If not, then no. Who are the hostesses?

What kind of DVDs do you do? And I've probably said this before..But it's cool that you (also) live in Minnesota! I live in Minnesota and even living in Minneapolis, it's still pretty culturally-BLAND where I live. It would be interesting to take up belly dancing; although it would probably be something that I would only do in front of the mirror (as opposed to in a class or with friends or something.) LOL.

Maezee- I use the Veena&Neena series. I live out in Burnsville for now, and have to agree there isn't much occuring in these parts. Do you attend the Rennissance Festival in the fall? We go every year and I try to make it to the Silks festival where they have the live belly dancing. It's wonderful! I'd like to find classes up here just to be able to have some fellowship time with women. As a stay at home mom it can get very bland very quickly, even though I love my children dearly. I don't dance with a troupe yet, but I hope to one day just for the experience. I love the dancing we see each year at the Rennissance festival held here. Namaste-Anora

Dawns don't dance, belly or otherwise, but it's fun to watch. I'm too darn tight with any kind of dancing. Maybe one day I will take lessons and see if that helps!

Dawn- Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I don't do many other dance things, though one day I want to learn more. I love belly dancing though because even though I'm still not as flexible as I would like to be, it's helped greatly improve my flexibility and it looks beautiful no matter what level you are at. Nope can't move my belly like that. It has a tendency to move by itself at times.

MCE- Very cool. My partner enjoys watching me as well, as the movements are very similar to some of our martial arts forms. And of course, he enjoys the other sides as well. I became interested when in Arizona and I was invited to a workshop. It was very liberating, yet I still felt uncomfortable in front of other women, so I went to video tapes. One day I'd like to be with a troupe, but I have a long way to go in learning. Thanks for responding. Namaste-Anora
