Do movies like Bruce Almighty, in which an actor plays God going too far ?

I have tried to watch Bruce Almighty a few times but I always get uneasy at the thought that JiM Carrey depicts God in a somewhat comical light and as a result I dont think I have ever been able to finish that movie .I am not saying that all such movies in which man tries to depict God rubs me the wrong way because I have watched the "Ten Commandments " and I never got that feeling just those movies in which the depiction may be either mocking or poking fun or even disrespecting God .I similarly watched Devils Advocate which stars Al Paccino as the devil basically and there was a scene in which he disrespected God and I didnt like that part of the movie.I know in his defence he was only acting but I would have a problem with such a part . Just my views what are yours ?Is this only acting and we shouldnt read too much into it or there is a more sinister plot

I've never watched bruce almighty but I did see the trailer and I've also felt that way, that's why I never got the chance to watched that movie...but I guess through movies they made fun of what seems to be essential in our lives. It may be an acting and really can entertain people, but I just hope they should not include God in shallow comedy movies, because it doens't really show reverence to our Lord.

Finally somebody who sees it from my point of view.Granted since I have written this discussion I have seen it from a lot oof different points of view and I can see how I may have overreacted because there is a message behind the movie that totally escaped me .However I still cannot get it out of my mind that we somehow should be careful how we portray God.Thank you for your answer

yes they should be more careful, because God is beyond description, no one can fathom his nature..

Are you saying God does not have a sense of humor? Come on! Lighten up, it is a movie. It is probably a better opinion of God than many people have. My parents would threaten us with God will punish us for more infractions like not eatingour vegetables. My parents made God out to be a mean being. I like the idea that God can smile and have fun.

I dont know ,I hope so .May be you are right and I need to lighten up ,I am going to try .I think parents sometimes like you say make God out to be a mean person,I dont think he is mean but I dint know how far his sense of humor goes either .I hope he finds this movie comical though.lol

Its just fun not a religius movie. No one takes it serius. I dont see any problems with movies like that when it does not offend a religion or God. There was nothing contraversial about that movie

That movie is so boring that i fell asleep half way through watching. It is such a low quality and badly scripted movie one can only find in Hollywood.

Hollywood only produced limited high quality movies each year but many 'junk' too.

I don't think we should read too much into it. I've seen Bruce Almighty, didn't like it at all. I do like Evan Almighty. Evan isn't playing God, God is doing things to him. It's not a great movie, but it's way better than Bruce! I don't believe in God. But I don't like the mockery made of religion either. Even if I'm an atheist, it bothers me to see a religious figure mocked. (Unless it's the Pope. I think I could handle that.)

I have seen Bruce Almighty a couple of months ago. At first i thought it was like what you think but when i see the whole movie that's when i understand. It has a lesson thought. I think you should watch the whole movie first before you think anything. It is a good movie i may say and i am sure you will prove yourself wrong once you finish it. The twist is near the end. The lesson is that we should not judge God because he didn't answer all people's prayer. In the movie it explains and shows why. So the thing you've seen at first, it may look like depicts but in the end it changes. He realize something and make him a new man in the end.

Hi ronnyb! I share the same sentiment my friend. I am not a fanatic but I get uncomfortable when anybody uses God's name in vain. I know that we can talk to God like a friend when we are praying but I guess there are some things that I can't really cross when it comes to depicting God in a comedy. Just my thoughts. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

Well it's just a movie right? People like to see what God could be like, what's wrong with that? I enjoyed the movie a lot. Morgan Freeman played his role well, in my opinion. But after the movie it's not like I believe that God is really like Morgan freeman in the movie. I know that it's not true. :)

You are entitled to feel uncomfortable with these types of movies. Personally I don't see the big deal, they are humorous and funny and I doubt God would disapprove. I have not seen Devils Advocate but as far as Bruce Almighty goes there actually was a moral to the story and something to take away from it. It is a personal thing though how you are affected by things like this. I respect God and I don't think Bruce Almighty went too far at all. I think God had a bit of a chuckle when he watched it!

I have to think that God has a sense of humor. After all we are created in His image and most of us have a sense of humor. Of course when I was a child I would get upset if someone poked fun at me but now that I have gown up I can appreciate humor so much more and often will poke fun at myself. Can we expect God to be any less able to appreciate a good joke, even if it is on himself? I don't think so.

i think that they send a message and are not there to mock God. but first of all is God really there?? bruce almighty was filmed to ask this and answer this question. truthfully speaking i need God's help but everytime i pray nothing comes out of it......

Even though I can see the controversy behind this subject, I must say that movies such as that do not really bother me all that much. When I watched Bruce Almighty, the message I got from it was, "Man cannot handle the power of God." Sure, it was hilariously projected, but none the less, the message stayed clear. It's just one of those things where you have to ease up the mind and learn to just enjoy it. I'd also like to add though, Morgan Freeman plays on kickass God. Hah!
