Need advice on donating a car

I have a 2001 PT Cruiser in great condition, with less than 30k miles on it. It needs a bit of cosmetic work, a bit of touch up here and there. The only thing really wrong with it is the sunroof won't close. I currently have it in my garage and I haven't used it in at least a year. Now, I was wondering, considering the current economic climate if I would be better off donating the car and taking the tax benefit, or trying to sell the car for anything I can get for it. My only fear on donating the car is the charity will let it go for a paltry sum of money, like less than $3k. I already purchased another car, and a motorcycle in the last year and I am desperate to get rid of it to make room. I'd love to hear from anyone that has any experience in this, whether positive or negative. One more thing, I was considering donating the vehicle to the Purple Heart charity, it's for wounded veterans.

It is nice that you are considering donating your car. If you are looking for a tax benefit, keep in mind that your deductions have to be equal to or greater than your standard deduction. that is $8950.00, if you are single or $17900.00, if you are married. I would try to sell the car for whatever I can get or if you really want the Purple Heart charity to have it, give it to them, but keep in mind your tax benefit.

Oh wow, I didn't realize I needed that much. I'm pretty sure there is no way I'll get that much for the car. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to sell it.
