Abuse victims abandoning their own children in an effort to save themselves...

I know that most abuse victims would give everything to have their children safe, with them, etc, but I've always wondered if there abuse victims out there who WILLFULLY(no reluctance) "sell out" or abandon/give up custody of their children to basically "save their own skin". I know abusive parents would certainly do it, but what about the victims? It must be rare, but how rare? Have any of you witnessed this sort of thing or been a victim of it? I'm actually asking for "writing research" reasons, but I'm also curious. It'd be an oddity, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.
