Tea doesn't contain sugar unless you add it. But rather than containing harmful substances, tea contains many good ones. Green tea especially has been touted for its health benefits. However, even black tea can give you some healthful ingredients. One such ingredient is polyphenols, which are antioxidants. Tea has been associated with lowering your risk for cardiac disease, stroke and some cancers. Tea does contain caffeine, which has a diuretic effect, possible leading to your experiencing some increase in the need for urination. However, it's only about half the caffeine contained in coffee. If you are concerned with sugar but don't care for drinking your tea unsweetened, try a sugar substitute or add a bit of honey. Honey has health benefits of its own to recommend it. Health experts recommend drinking 1 or 2 cups of tea daily, so if you are drinking three cups, you need only cut out one of those.
