I ran into an old comedy this morning titled Cold Turkey. The premise was a tobacco company offered $25 million to any town in the US that could quit smoking for 30 days. It had to be 100% of the population. The town willing to try was poverty stricken with no visible source of income as everybody was unemployed. Of course the problems that ensued were hilarious in the movie. It did get me to thinking though....if your town could become $25 million richer in 30 days, would you be willing to go cold turkey in order to save your town??? Even if it meant NO cheating & sneaking a butt??? Would it bother you that the money was going to the town even though you were the one suffering??? Please be honest!!!

Sure, I'd do it! I've cut down so much anyway, it wouldn't be bad. My little city could certainly use that money! Besides, think of how much us smokers would save on health care and not buying the coffin nails!

My ex brother-in-law quit when he realized how much extra he was paying for just health insurance alone. It was NO where near $25 million!!!

Not feeling well, I'm sure it is hard to even imagine right now. However, imagine the only business in town that employs practically everybody closes down & everybody is out of work. The only way to save the town is to quit smoking for a month. I do believe you could muster up the strength to get 'r done!!!

Wow - you'd really be letting your whole town down if you smoked, wouldn't you? I don't smoke anymore, but my husband does - and there's no way he'd give up, not for all the money in the world! He won't give up for me, OR our children and grandchildren - so a town getting a few mill wouldn't matter to him one iota! I'm guessing he'd sell up and move out of the town rather than have the responsibility!

I am going to take a stab at this question from the point of an ex smoker..lol..
If you would have asked me this a few years back, my answer might have been different though I doubt it. When I set out to do something, I can be very stubborn. If the whole town were doing it too, I would be the one to stick to it just so I could say I did it!
I would not be upset if the money went to the town. I would just hope the town would spend the money wisely like on healthcare which to me is the most important issue. WIthout your health, you have nothing.

The city council was planning on building a hospital. To keep the suspense at the end, part of the people wanted the money divided evenly between the town folk for all their pain & suffering. A little selfish I do believe!!!

yes it would bother me because why should I be the only one who suffers. If I am doing all the work then I should get the reward. Now if I have enough , then I don't mind sharing some.

Hi LadMarissa,
Wow! what an idea, but I take the smokers who are addicted to smoking would be a pain to live with and there would be much arguing in the town, mine you if it was me, I'll skip over to the next town and hve a quick smoke hehehe.

Hi,
I woulsd happily give it a shot, what happened with the money? if it was split between the residents and the town had a population of say hypothetically 1 million they would only get $25 each - I probably wouldn't do it for thast amount.
Happy mylotting

not everyone in my town would quit. i said i would quit when i got pregnant with my son (now 2)... that lasted til the 7th month, and only becuase it made me sick. then, well i got back into it for some reason, stress, anxiety, im not really sure. and then i started back at my old job, and then i really started smoking. im there from 645am-3pm (hrs vary), and i smoke more cigs there than at home. go figure. i vowed to myself and my husband that if we get pregnant again, and i found out it was a girl, i'd quit. then i changed it, to if i get pregnant i will quit, because ya'll have no idea how badly i want another child. so im willing to give up my worst habit in order for that to happen.
but my town, ok, i live in a little trailor park where i know my 1 neighbor, and that one neighbor is the only family i give a crap about in here, so if everyone else was broke and suffering, i honestly wouldn't care. if I was doing something good for myself, my 1 neighbor or my family and my friends, then it would be ok.
