...has anyone in mylot who lives in the cold climate started their gardens indoors yet? My daughter and I planted cherry tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, cantaloupe, and sweet basil last week. The cantaloupe sprouted a few days ago and already a few inches tall. I just went to check on the others and found the green beans have not only sprouted but are about 5 inches tall already. We planned on going grocery shopping later so I guess we will be making a stop at the farm store to get a piece of acrylic to make a cold frame outside for the beans being they are going to get too big for indoors in a few weeks. Knew I should of started them end of March instead of now. If you started your garden already, what have you planted and any plants yet?

Well I just might give it a shot again...Seems I've lost my green thumb somehow. I did plant seedlings last year and nothing much happened...waaaahhhhh.
But being the stubborn beech that I am, and yes, I am, I'm not going to give up so gee...think I'll get up from here right now and started planting again...
(pyewacket leaves the computer to start planting some seeds...Pyewacket will follow his mom with amusement)

lol Pyewacket can help you as well. Drop the seeds on top the soil and let him tamp them down with his front paws. Take a look at these green beans. You might want to put a heating pad under the pot on low heat with a cover over it till they sprout. Warm, moist soil helps them sprout faster.

Didn't you mention once that you had a fire escape outside your window or something like that? If so, tomatoes can go out there, no? Make sure you plant some catnip/catgrass in a pot just for Pyewacket and Kissy. I'm going to do that. I have a big pot that had a green bean plant in it that Tigger and Simba destroyed so I'm planting catnip and once that sprouts and a few inches tall, I'll transplant into the big pot and then sprinkle cat grass seeds around it. Gotta cover the whole thing with netting so the cats will leave it alone till big enough for them to enjoy.

Heehee..I just bet Pyewacket would LOVE to pat those paws on the dirt. Heat isn't a problem...my built in the walls radiators are underneath each window, so if anything it's TOO hot..LOL
Oh and I did plant some seeds ...parsley, basil, mint, chives..also planted some flower seeds of daisies, marigolds, and dianthus. I'll see if I can find some vegetable seeds during the week..would LOVE to have some beans. I do have tomato seeds but then I read how toxic not only tomatoes are to cats but the stems and leaves--any ideas there as I would love to plant some though--remember I live in an apt...so no yard...so all my growing is going to have to be indoors

I would love to start an indoor garden...but I have one particular kitten that is so stubborn that I just KNOW that whatever I planted would be uprooted and all over the floor in 2.5 seconds! So needless to say, I haven't done that in a long long time.

If you were able to make one of these, no cat or kitten will be able to get to them. lol I found this in someone's garbage and thought it was pretty clever whoever made it. I want to make one just like it but lot bigger. So far, Tigger, who LOVES my carrot tops, hasn't been able to figure out how to get to these plants.

I know it would. lol I'm thinking someone made it as a model for the real mccoy they were wanting to build and then just threw it out afterwards. Hubby had no clue what it was till I told him. lol

Good idea. Don't do what I did cause you'll be having your outdoor garden indoors for awhile. lol

We started herbs and greens while it was still winter. I started chives and parsley last week 'cause I finally found some time. Soon it's eggplants, tomatos, and peppers!

Wish my tomatoes and peppers were up already. I never seem to have any luck getting them to sprout and grow no matter what I do. Always end up buying the plants which are lot more expensive. My basil didn't even sprout and that is usually easy for me to start indoors.

I have not personally started my indoor garden yet, but I think I will start some of our planting indoors this year.

No I haven't started any yet. But I have ordered all of my seeds and I'm just waiting for the 1st of March to get here. I started to a week or so ago but I would be like you. They would get too big and I wouldn't be able to do anything with them. I would love to have a greenhouse to work in year round. Now that would be cool! LOL Good Luck! I'm going to wait a couple of more weeks before I get started.

Yeah, those tiny seeds are hard to see. They looked like the spots on our counter when my daughter poured them out. I got a piece of scotch tape to find them. lol My potatoes are all ready to plant. They have been sitting in a box in the closet for several months now, just waiting for Good Friday. I grow a couple basil plants every 10yrs. I'll pull them up, cut off the roots, hang them upside-down from the shed rafters for a few weeks to dry, then crumble them into a big dark container for storage and use as needed. I'm finally almost out so figured this spring would be a good time to plant more.

No, I have not started yet, it's way to dark here to start - I haven't grown anything indoors the last years, since I don't think it's worth the effort and time. I buy my tomatoe plants and get several different kinds that way, even if it costs a bit more. If I would buy seeds for 10 different ones it would cost a lot as well.
The only things I use to grow indoors is flowers for the summers - but like I wrote - I haven't done that in years.

Looks like I'm going to be buying my tomatoes and peppers again this year being none of them came up yet and it's been a while now. Only the beans and cantaloupe came up. Never did have luck getting the seeds to grow even when I just buy them fresh. Here, it's much cheaper to buy the seeds and plant yourself than to buy the plants when it's time to plant outside.

awwwwwwwww...I'm sure you can find the room for a few pots of tomatoes or peppers, no? I grow carrots year round indoors in a couple of big pots myself.
