One of the cause of hiccups is the sudden change of temperature and another one is overeating. According to my research this are ways to stop hiccups:
* Pull your tongue fairly forcefully.
* Use a teaspoon to lift the uvula. This is the fleshy tag that hangs down from the back of the roof of the mouth.
* Use a cotton wool bud to tickle the roof of your mouth, at the point towards the back where the hard roof becomes softer.
* Hold your breath for as long as possible, then swallow when you feel a hiccup is about to come.
* Pant deeply.
* Breathe into a paper bag 10 times, holding the edges of the bag tightly against your face to make a good seal.
* Swallow while holding your nose closed.
* Take a teaspoonful of sugar, swallowed dry.
* Drink a glass of water very quickly, while a friend puts their hands over your ears.
* Gargle with water mixed with vinegar.
* Bend forward and drink water from the wrong side of a glass.
* Chew and swallow some dry bread.
* Pull your knees up or lean forward to squeeze your chest.
Hope these helps you.

This might seem strange but try not breathing for a minute or if you can't.. try it for 30 seconds.
Hope that helps
or if that doesn't help try the traditional way! Get someone to scare you though that will be awfully hard because you are already expecting it.

Hiccups are caused by air in the lungs. I always try to hold my breath for a few seconds at a time to get rid of them.

possible cause of hiccups:
abdominal surgery, conditions that affect the nerves surrounding the diaphragm
and the damage to the portion of the brain the affects hiccups can all cause them.. Eating hot and spicy foods or liquids or inhaling noxious fumes can also cause the
hiccups.
To stop hiccups, try breathing into a paper bag or holding your breathe.
Or you can try drinking a glass of water or swallowing teaspoon of sugar to stop hiccups...

I have heard that good solution is to drink a clod water leaning your head down so the water gets in your throat from a different angle. Other good way to stop hiccups is holding your breathing for about 10 times each goes for a t least 10 seconds.
Effective thing is fear, ask someone to scare you!
Anyway, I hope your hiccups have finished now! But these are some ways to know in a future!

Well this is kind-of disgusting, but I promise you it works. I do it all the time. Eat a tablespoon of plain yellow mustard, just like you put on hot dogs and stuff. Get a good heaping spoon-full of it and gulp/gag it down. I am not joking with you...it may taste a little nasty, but for some reason, it always cures my hiccups. I have no clue why, but it works...

I'm not sure what cause of hiccups, djoyce, but I read some of you responses and explained what it is and thanks to them. When I'm having hiccups I normally drink water and hold my breath for as long as I can, while drinking the water and it seems to work for me. May be you can try this and I hope it works for you also.

Well I don't really know what's the cause of hiccups but I can suggest some solutions. I've tried these things myself but I'm not sure if it work on you. Try taking some sugar one table spoon. Drinking water is effective too. There must be something wrong with how you drank the water. You should drink it, or should I say sip it, like how you drink a hot coffee. slowly.. It works for me. That's the most effective thing I've tried, drinking some water. Hope it works for you.

I have just been reading up on hiccups. There is alot of weird and wonderful remedies to try and stop hiccups.
The site that I was reading mentioned the bag method and hold breath, but is not really recommended.
I would suggest. Sit some where where you would be comfortable. Don't have the tv on that would distract you. Close your eyes and slow down you breathing by taking deeper breaths. Even have a bottle of water to sip on while you do it. The most important part of my suggestion is to relax your whole body. Like going into meditation. But concentrate sole just on breathing and sipping the water.
It is totally up to you if you want to even think about this suggestion. I am not going to ask you to take it if you don't want to. It is just an idea.

I was watching a reenactment show one time, and the doctor tried every hiccup cure, but nothing was working. The one that actually worked was... he took his index and middle fingers, and pressed just above the lady's eyebrows(one hand per eyebrow). Now, I use that method. You have to put your fingers on the right spot. Just BARELY above the highest part of your eyebrows, it feels kind of like there's a little muscle or something (unlike your forehead, which feels just like skin on top of bone). That's the part where you have to press... for maybe 30 seconds.
If that doesn't work, there are tons of suggestions here:
