Thought I was talking bras again didn't you? I have just demolished a shop bought cup cake, well, er.... two actually. They weren't very big. Oh alright, they were; and that's what inspired this discussion. Firstly, I have no idea why they are called "cup cakes". Were they originally baked in a cup, didn't the mixture get messy from the tea or coffee already in the cup? Secondly, do like big ones or teeny weeny one bite size? Frosting all over or just piled high in the centre?

Hi P1kef1sh, I guess they are called cup cakes as we eat them with a cup of tea, maybe the smaller size ones could have been placed onb a saucer in the days of cups and saucers rather than mugs. I don't really eat them but I buy the Fabulous Baking Boys ones for the kids when on offer and they are fairly large with lots of chunky icing on the top. Hope you enjoyed the two you have just devoured. Huggles. Ellie :D

What a disappointment - I was convinced you were talking about bras again and was very interested to see if you were still the same size or had changed since the infamous picture!
As for cup cakes definitely smaller is better for me - I love it when Niamh makes cakes - they are the best ever!!! xxxx

I like the jumbo ones, but just the tops. Somehow, the tops are always moister and the top has always been my favorite. No frosting, unless it is carrot, though. The carrot ones have to have cream cheese frosting.
Oooh, I need to go make me some breakfast!

*L* never thought about it that way, but, if the frosting is done correctly, I guess it is a little like carrot cheesecake, in reverse*L*

I make everything bite sized since becoming OCD about calories. Baking cookies in December was a nightmare!
Both my mother and Bella wanted big cookies that you had to break apart to dunk in your favorite cookie beverage. All my cookies were bite sized for my kids.
One cookie. One bite. One happy kid without the sugar rush.
It's no wonder I was baking a total of 44 hours between the 3 times I baked! A normal cookie recipe typically yields 3 dozen cookies....I was getting nearly 5 dozen because mine were so small.
Now to answer your discussion....my kids love cupcakes. I hate them. If I am forced to eat one, I would prefer it be bite sized and I scrape 90% of the icing off of it.

I remember those days when calories didn't matter. I remember them fondly. When no one ever said to me "wow you look great for having kids" lol
I'm sure those days will return....when I'm a grandma :)

C on a bad day, D on a good day, p1key. LOL
I think they're called cupcakes because they're baked in pans with little cups in them. No, that doesnt make sense. Ok, try this. Because.........because.........oh shite, p1key, I don't know! I'm getting all confused here! Didn't some big bosomed woman give you the lowdown on Marie Antoinette or something. Yes? Ok, then, what she said..........

36 um B or C, not sure some days.
Oh, cupcakes. Now you're just getting TOO personal.
I like medium sized ones myself. But I love frosting on top, especially chocolate. I'm a sucker for chocolate every time.

Hey p1ke! That is such a great question! I have no idea where they got the
name "cup cakes"! I wish they were cup size! I like them as big as I can
get them and with as much frosting on them as they can fit! I don't care
how messy the are because I can always wipe my face when I'm finished!
I'm not interested in those one or two bite teeny things! I want a
very large cup cake piled as high as it can be! Yummy!

Thanks....no, just THANKS! Here I am, at work in the morning, taking my first coffee break, where there are NO cupcakes to be seen, or near me, since the cafeteria does not sell them either, and NOW I'm craving this and will continue to do so until I get home, to either make some, or cross the street to 7-11 to get them.
YOU'RE AWESOME!
(snickerz) You really are, but hrm, that is a good question, and to help me with this, I'm stealing my roommates very famous quote, "Food to Mouth ratio."
With this quote, I think I shall have to go with the mini cupcakes, perfect portions. But then again, even if I got the bigger ones, I tend to tear them apart so it's easier to munch on, less messy too in a way.
As for frosting? Not a big fan of it, I prefer the fruity cupcakes, but I guess those would be muffins then....but yeah, not overly enthused about the frosting, whip cream though? yum.

I adore those chocolate cup cakes. Come to think of it I haven't bought them for ages. Thanks for the reminder. One bite size is never enough - I'd easily polish off six of those in one go. The bigger the better, but the topping has to be all over. Do you suck off the chocolate that is left on the paper after you've pulled the cake out?

Just try saying 'suck the topping off' if you've been at the cooking sherry!
And while we're at it, a lot of USrecipes advise you to use a cup of this or a cup of that but the cup sizes we have in this house vary from dainty little coffee cups to two-pint mugs!
Where do you draw the line, so to speak?

Hello my dear p1kef1sh Ji,
Well, I do not have much idea, however, what I have collected from net is reproduced
below and for mor you may log on :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupcake
"History
In the early 19th century, there were two different uses for the name "cup cake" or
"cupcake". In previous centuries, before muffin tins were widely available, the cakes
were often baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins, or molds and took their name
from the cups they were baked in. This is the use of the name that has persisted, and
the name of "cupcake" is now given to any small cake that is about the size of a
teacup. The name "fairy cake" is a fanciful description of its size, which would be
appropriate for a party of diminutive fairies to share....."
may god bless you and have a great time.

Yeppers, I did.. I think the mini ones are cute, but for me the bigs ones just hit the spot for me..and it takes less to fill me up and satisfy me.. Definitely with frosting on top..got to get my sugar rush for the day in..but with muffins I still like the big ones but nothing on top..favorite muffins being banana nut muffins and blueberry..yum.. I just might make me some today.. Maybe they are called cupcakes because they were about the size of a teacup? and that you can cup them into your hand and eat them. Other then that I am stumped..

LOL I had to laugh while reading your post. Yes I thought you were talking bras when I saw your title. I do not eat sweets much so the cup cake does not sound good at all to me. Glad you enjoyed it though. Have a wonderful day.

I love big chocolate muffins!
The bigger and chocolatey the better! Must have large chocolate chunks in though! Not itty bitty ones!

I always assumed that cup cakes were so called because of the American habit of measuring ingredients in 'cups'.
I've just started making fairy cakes (sorry, they will always be fairy cakes to me) by the box full each morning. I go through these phases with baking, and I expect I'll get bored again soon. However, in the meantime my household are making the most of it, and there's certainly very few returning home each day in the empty box.
In terms of size, I think smaller has to be better in the case of cakes. That way, you can make more different varieties and justify scoffing more of them far more easily :-)

I like the average sized ones. Not too big, not too little. I don't mind icing all over them, I hate it when it is piled really high though because then I can not bit in to it without makeing a big mess. So I like a thin layer of icing all over the top. I don't like mini cup cakes because they are just too small to satisfy me.
