i actually want my son to pick up martial arts as well. it's so that he can at least protect himself and those dear to him. being a boy, he does like to see monsters and fights and all but so far hasn't gotten any interest to learn one though i guess he is just 6 yrs old. he does seem to take an interest in football though but i doubt if it's for long just as how most children are. their ambitions keep changing as they grow, same as it was for me. hehe for me, i enjoyed playing volleyball, and though i was not a superb player, i loved it a lot. i still like it though i don't play it nowadays as i have more or less no chance.

I think it's good. Here some children will also learn the martial arts as their parents want their children to have a stronger body and be healthier. I am not so sure what kind of sports my child likes at present. As little children change all the time. But in summer we will go to swim as I think swimming is a very good sports. I love China

Currently, my boys are both in wrestling. My oldest also enjoys football and my younger boy enjoys soccer. My daughter enjoys cherrleading and is anxiously awaiting the next chance to do it. So far, they have not taken an interest in any other sports, but if they do, I will do everything I can to let them give it a try.

Yes, it is better to let kids choose their own hobbies. When I was a kid I loved drawing. Then two years later, I changed to like Karate. I left all that drawing hobby.

Thanks for your reply. Oh, ok, your son doesn't like Tae Kwon Do? Well there's plenty of other styles out there that he may like. Every heard of Hapkido? It's Korean in origin, has kicks, but also incorporates a lot of grappling, ground work, and joint locks. To each his own I suppose. Keep up the good work. It's great to see a family get involved in some sort of physical fitness activity. You should be very proud!

My friend does martial arts and he loves it. He has made it to some of the highest parts of his class which is really cool. He goes to competitions and things like that. I think your son would really like martial arts, and it may help him learn how to properly defend himself.

Hi marketing, you are really a caring mom and are so enthusiastic as well to take care of your son on every aspect. And recently you plan to let him to learn some sport games like basket ball and etc, anyway he is always one step ahead you. Wow! It’s really nice to learn that your son has his own individuality and always has his own determination to do his favorite thing like participating the martial art class. Yeah he really gives you a big surprise. My son did learn swimming in his elementary days. He learned the Chinese jingwu martial art during his middle school days. Martial art is a very good form of exercise to train the kids both in their mental and physical. So I supported and encouraged him to do his favorite sports to keep him fit and healthy during those days. Happy posting and have a nice day.

The wonderful benefits of martial arts are amazing. Discipline, self-control, balance, respect, humbleness, manners, caring, all are basic tenents of Martial arts. Not only will your son be learning a wonderful self defense mechanism, he will also be learning valuable life lessons. He is very young so I would let me try it out to see if he really wants to do it. Mind you, it is difficult, and if he starts competing, it does start to get expensive. Last summer I took my daughter to Detroit, Michigan ( I live in Florida) to compete at the nationals. We had to make it into a vacation as it was very expensive, but it was worth it when she won her division. She will be a 2nd degree black belt this summer and takes her Taekwondo training very seriously. Good luck to you!

Most of my kids do get involved in sports. Nowadays involvement in sports is important because it adds up to the average school marks. I have my preferences but the kids were never dictated to be active in any of the sports in my preference list. I want them to enjoy doing ir, rather than feeling that they had to do it. With the present situation my stress is on learning and practising martial arts. It teaches discipline, teamwork, and thinking out of the box. I used to play table tennis (ping pong), badminton, hockey, volleyball, takraw, and rugby. Now I concentrate more on martial arts. all the best, rosdimy

Hi marketing07, I am single, so, i dont have kids... Anyhow I would like to answer this question.... When I am in college days, I looked to join martial arts, but no one supported me at that time(no money) later I learned hand ball which is not as good as martial arts. Still I feel to learn martial arts. Martial arts gives lot of enthusiasm to learn new things. There are many good things we can learn with martial arts. "Practising protecting Yourself" in childhood means very very good thought....Go Ahead....

Martial arts are good combination of installing health, confidence, sense of accomplishment and overall well being to a kid. Since he's tall, as you say, maybe learning the art called Tae Kwon Do, will be good for him. It is a Korean martial art that puts emphasis on kicking techniques. Japanese and Korean martial arts schools tend to be more regulated, with training staff, use of equipment, after school programs, rankings, tournaments, etc. Where as many mixed martial arts (like what is shown on TV), are very "underground", with shady practices, and are not regulated very well. You wanna make sure your kid is training in a safe environment. Check to see if the martial arts school is INSURED. **Very important to consider this.** Also certain martial art schools don't teach the true art. They may "water down" the style just to keep you coming back to take your money. Look around, maybe pay a visit to the school or dojo, see who is actually teaching the classes, consider what you're getting for your money, then make a well informed decision. Happy Training!
