Can Caffeine make you MORE tired?

I've been wondering this for awhile. I go for the caffeine when I wake up or when I feel like I need a pick-me-up. But sometimes I think it makes me EVEN MORE tired! I just drank an iced coffee that I made and now I feel like I'm about to fall off my chair! I'm sooo drowsy, it isn't even funny. I was mildly tired before I drank it but now I'm realllyyyy sleepy. Have you ever heard of this happening before? Can caffeine make you more tired instead of more alert like it's supposed to?

You develop a tolerance and then it takes more to make you feel awake.

I know that you can build up a tolerance but I actually do believe it makes me more tired sometimes. It is real strange.

I think that if you get used to the caffeine in it you can become accustomed to it and therefore it have no effect on you what so ever. I know that I was like that with Coca Cola drinks, but I haven't drank that in awhile so now Coffee gives me a bit of a pick me up.

I can understand that SomeCowgirl... getting used to the caffeine and then it doesn't have the same effect on you. But, this is different... I think it does actually make me more tired. It is really weird and hard to explain. I guess I'm just strange sometimes! LoL My body likes to mess with me. I have thyroid disease and for the past several years I've also had some mystery disease which might be MS my neurologist told me, but he is only 50% sure. It really stinks not knowing. Anyway, thanks for replying. I think I might have to go lie down soon or at least rest a bit.

That has happened to me also. You get that caffeine rush from drinking some morning coffee and then later on it seems that the perkiness that I had as led to feeling a little lethargy. That is what caffeine does to you. It makes you tired later on in the day after it wears off in your system.

Just like with most addictive substances, and as a sel proclaimed coffee-o-holic I know this lol, once the effect wears off your body crashes. I found an interesting article about it here. http://health.howstuffworks.com/caffeine4.htm

Caffeine does not wake me up, that's for sure. I don't know if it can make you more tired or not. The only caffeine I take in is in chocolate or the occasional soda pop. I don't drink coffee really so I am sorry I guess I can't say one way or the other. Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

Sometimes that is true for my wife. It does not wake me up either. I don't know, I just drink an occasional espresso every now and then but it never really wakes me up. I know that is what caffeine is supposed to do but I have never seen that happen.

yes it does, caffeine perks you up for a period of about 20 minutes then it causes you to crash, there has been numerous studies done on this. That is why doctors tell you if you feel tired eat an apple or an orange, it will give you vitamins and strength and you won't crash 20 minutes afterwards.

That is very good advice being that apples do have caffeine in them and could help perk you up without that ugly and tired feeling that one could get just minutes after drinking that coffee. There have been studies on caffeine and I certainly believe in a lot of the research done on that matter.

Coffee always has that effect on me. Maybe not first thing in the morning perhaps but it doesn't stimulate me either...it's my choice of drink throughout the day and even before bedtime. I have always looked forward to coffee breaks at work but there was never any jolt to perk me up. I'm not sleeping well at the moment, in fact some nights I cannot sleep at all. I have tried not having coffee after my dinner but it makes no difference. In seems that I can at least sleep a little if I DO have a cuppa.

I think it probably can, it depends on how your system is wired. Think of those people with ADD or ADHD--the meds they are given are stimulants yet it calms them down and allows them to focus because they are wired differently. Try drinking decaffeinated if you can and see if you get the same reaction. Maybe try some chamomile tea that relaxes most people and see if it gives you some pep instead!

I have heard of that before. It is a little strange that certain disorders such as ADD and the like can be used as a sort of way to calm them down. I guess it brings on the focus as you mention. It probably depends on each individual system and how each person handles it.

Of course I love coffee, but sometimes I don't understand the effects it had on me. There were times that after drinking coffee, I got nervous for nothing specific reason. Sometimes I don't. There maybe some compound in the coffee that trigger those. Anyways, I still love coffee.

I do not drink coffe, but my husband does. He is always complaining about being tired. I always question him on this, because he hasn't done anything to make him tired. Now, that you have started this discussion, I am wondering if him being tired all of the time is due to the coffee. He drinks about three cups a day.

You are not alone. Caffeine is apt to make me tired too. After 2 or 3 cups, I've even had to take a nap before. Murphy's law says that if I can't sleep at night and have a couple of cups of coffee to make me tired...that I'd then probably bounce off the walls.

It seems that caffeine does make people tired only maybe hours after it has been drunk and then it starts to leave the system feeling very weak and tired. I know that has happened to me. That coffee is definitely an addiction that is hard for some people to quit. The effects are alright in the beginning until they wear off.

I ABSOLUTELY do have thyroid problems and have for about 15 years or so. How do you know that caffeine is bad to take and will make somebody who has it tired? I have never heard that before from any of my doctors or anything I've read through the years. I will definitely cut back on the caffeine though and try to eliminate it completely. I hope it helps. Thanks a lot!

caffeine affects people in different ways. I've worked coffee for 5+ years and I notice it in each customer. I personally get sleepy. I dont drink coffee regularly as it is. But there are days i'm at the peak of exhaustion and drink coffee and get nothin, or a nice swift kick in the sleepy pants lol. your not strange or anything or wierd so dont think that. its like people who drink coffee and are wired for 2 days just from one cup (my friends mom). Its more of a case by case. It's more of the stigmatism attached that its all about waking you up in the morning. dang those pesky commercials. :D

It depends. If am I extremely tired then coffee will not have any effect on me, but if I am only mildly tired, then it will perk me up for about an hour or two.

I drink coffee all day and it does not keep me awake. I drink a mug of creamy coffee before I go to bed and I sleep like a log so I also think it just makes me sleepy.

I have just spent time this morning researching coffee because I have been increasingly suspicious it is making me more tired. Like you, after a few sips in the morning, sometimes I feel extremely tired. Looking on the internet, I found lots of articles that explain how, yes, it can cause more sleepiness. It has something to do with confusing the delicate balance in our nervous system of adenosine. Coffee can also affect people differently. So, yes, both common sense and a little research shows that coffee can make you more sleepy.

That does happen. There are some people that caffeine does not work and you may be one of those people. I am the same. Maybe we are just weird, needing what makes us drowsy to keep us awake. I find that after I have some booze, I am fully awake. Weird isn't it? Or maybe I am not drinking Starbucks coffee. I heard that that is so strong it can keep anybody awake.

Right now I am writing on myLot and there is a cup of Tim HOrton's coffee, and I am starting to go asleep. You don't suppose they put sleeping pills in it?

Oh yes, unfortunately it can. I try to drink only one serving of caffeine a day, usually a coke. But sometimes I go for another one, and if I drink too much, I crash. I get tired and irritable. Too much caffeine does have the opposite of the desired effect.

Caffeine provides energy for the first while after It is drank but after a while it wears off and you end being more tired that you were!

I think it depends on the individual. It must act in some like ridulin does in the hyperactive child. It also causes hardening of the arteries so who is to say??!! All these in small amounts though.
