Does essence transcend existence or does existence transcend essence

This is a question that i received in philosophy class. The question is basically asking, in my opinion, if peoples' souls existed before the actual tangible person or vice versa. This is a proving to be a very thought provoking question to me. It may be like that for me because i misinterpreted the question. If i did, please give me your thoughts on the meaning of the question, and also what is your opinion on my answer to the question.

my interpretation to the question is something like,did our essence exist before we existed or did our essence exist after we existed..hmmm quite confusing,the question gives a lot of thought,or it could be something like whats more important in our being,our existence or our essence? i hope my opinion helped.
