Extraterrestrial Life? Where would it be?

According to mathematical calculations there should be millions if not billions of other worlds similar to earth that are capable of supporting life. I would like to know what you think of there being extraterrestrial life or not. Let me ask you this, could humans in face be the only species in the universe? Could the static that we take as nothing when we listen for signs of intelligent life trying to communicate with us actually be a part of a message. I mean could the human race be in the middle of an intergalactic conversation between different alien species?
