Filling up!

Filling up! - Gas Station

When I was a kid I remember my dad driving to the petrol/gas station and asking the forecourt assistant to fill his car with petrol/gas and then he would pay the man. These forecourt assistants died out after a time and all the petrol/gas stations became self service and pay at the kiosk. When I lived out in America I felt like I had gone back in time as all the petrol/gas stations I visited all over the States were all manned. That was 15 odd years ago now and I am not sure if things have changed. I did feel like I was getting a good, personal service by having my car filled up for me and some petrol/gas stations would even clean my windscreen! Where you live, are the petrol/gas stations self service or manned? Which do you prefer?

This discussion relates to one of the things that irks me the most! Here in Canada, they are mostly self serve but there are a few full service stations. I absolutely hate the fact that they are all going self serve!..I realize its to save money, dont have to pay a gas attendant, but what about the elderly or handicapped? There are a lot of people quite capable of driving but find it very difficult to pump gas because of some disability. Also the personal service that used to come with giving the windshield a quick wash. Sometimes these little things can mean a lot to some people who might find it difficult to do. I think all gas stations should have both types of service.

Hi there sandymay48 You are totally right but maybe their insurance or something covers them for people who leave without paying because the cameras would have got their number plates. In the UK you can also pay at the pump by inserting your card so you don't have to go in the shop. I think they should at least have someone on hand to help the elderly and handicapped for sure!! Thanks for your response

Also I dont see how they are saving money when people are filling their vehicles and driving away!!..It happens a lot. Having manned stations would stop this

We have the pay at the pump method too but not really many cameras that can catch a license plate. Its becoming a huge problem here called gas and grab. They are rethinking the way gas is pumped and perhaps having to pay first. Dont know how well that would work as you could pay one amount and fill the car and take off!

I remember those days Humbug. We had a garage in our village where my Dad would "fill up" for less than a fiver! You'd have your windscreen washed, tyres inflated and a conversation about this, that and the other. I was at primary school with the proprietor's son. He had red hair but I can't remember his name! The garage is still there. It has a corner shop, but it's all serve yourself. I can think of one garage not too far from here that will serve you. But petrol there is about 5p higher a litre than anywhere else, and that influences peoples decisions. If you use the car occasionally the maybe you might go there. But if you fill up weekly; it's off to the cheapest, not the most friendly, I am afraid.

I don't think that they do. They just serve you and chew the fat.

Hullo p1kef1sh At this friendly garage do they still give your windscreen a once over? I guess that these days every little helps and if that means getting 5p a litre off and double points then so be it! Cheers p1key

Forgive me first of all for digressing on your subject, but it is I feel pertinent to the personal touch service, at our local library the staff have been replaced by machines, now instead of getting the personal touch of one of those lovely ladies to talk to or smile at you, Wolfie likes a nice smile when I take my books in or out, we are now greeted or not so greeted by a machine which you scan your books in and out with, it's horrid! I like the personal touch, so going back to your question, I much prefer the personal touch, too much is taken over in this day by machines. Where will it end, being a scifi fan I can't help wondering if it'll be a world like Terminator! When machines take over! Apologies for digressing my friend, but I am sure you understand, sadly all our petrol stations well the ones I frequent an go past in Kent are all self-serve!

Hi ya wolfie34 how ya been? Well I hope! I feel sorry for the handicapped who have to get out of their cars to go and pay or to even fill their car up. Why don't they have like a disabled pump or something for those that find that sort of thing difficult to do and it could be manned!! We are still a little bit behind here in the far South West as we still have to give our books to the lady at the desk to do at the library but I can't say that she is all that smiley anyway and watches my boys like a hawk when ever we are in there over the top of her half moon glasses. I don't mind you digressing my friend, it's just good to hear from you! Cheers wolfie

But it's so much cheaper Wolfie. Think of all the leisure time that we have now that we've been replaced by machines. Of course we don't have any money - but at least we can all meet down at the Library, read the papers, borrow a book, via a machine, and press the screen operated tourist advice screens. If there's one thing that I pray for from this recession, it is that just maybe we can get back to some old fashioned service. I can dream.

Yes, they have changed here in the states as well. At least I know they did where I live here in California. As you mentioned people had the option to either get full service (an attendant) to pump the gas, or self service where you do it yourself. Right around the time I was a teenager it started to die down and only certain gas stations had full service, like Shell. Now there isn't any such thing as a full service gas station, at least that I know of. I know I haven't seen any such thing in my neck of the woods. I don't mind self service gas stations, but some days I wish there were still full service gas stations, even if it was a little more expensive...

Hi ya sacmom I too don't mind self service, well not that we have a choice but to get on with it but it would be nice to have someone do it for you and give your car a quick service whilst they are at it. They might sell some more oil if they checked it for you oil too!! Thanks sacmom

Hi ANTIQUELADY Very true they did used to check your oil and tyres. Now we have to pull over to the air machine and put a token or money in the slot to inflate our tyres if need be. I haven't got a clue what the pressure should be in my tyres and should really get them checked but I don't want to pay a garage to do it. I will maybe look up what the pressure should be for my car and get it sorted at the service station!! Thanks for the reminder! Thanks ANTIQUE

Hi ya thecrazyjogger Well there are some pumps in my town that are actually manned but that is because they are very very old and it is not a gas station as such, it is a garage that sells car bits and they have a coupld of pumps and you have to pull up on the pavement for them to refuel your car. I have never used it but I don't think they would clean your windscreen either! Thanks for your response

Here in the Philippines most gas stations are manned. If ever there are self service gas stations they're probably not even 2% of the total. But, I'd like to be able to try that too.

Hi ya aprilten I think it is great if you have the choice then you can decide for yourself which you would rather do and if you have difficulties you can go to the manned one and if you are short for time you can go self service! Thanks for your response

Hi ya Rellz007 I am not sure I would trust someone who didn't actually work for the gas station even if they were just trying to make a few bucks, I would rather just give them some money! Thanks for your response

Hello littleowl Well we have these two pumps in the town I live in but they are really old and you have to mount the pavement so that the man can put the petrol in your car and there is only room for one car. I'm not even sure if he sells petrol, it might be just diesel. As you have guessed I have never used him but I don't think he would clean my windscreen while I waited either! Cheers littleowl

though i really envy those countries who are so progressive. but these personal touch and manned service that we get to enjoy in not so high tech country. and yes still have those manned service. and i don't see any change in the future cause the progress in our country is quite slow. and i will hate to see those machine take over those manned service. cause me too like to have some personal touch and see some people coming up to me to help me out or serve me when i want a fill up for my automobiles.

Hi ya hotsummer Yes it is a shame that things have been taken over by a machine where once a man stood to help and chat, you can't get that sort of serivice from a machine! Thanks for your response

hello humbug there are still some gas stations around here in Middle Tennessee that have full service that like. i think some bp gas stations have full service and i cannot think of that other gas station right now that only offers full service. i appreciate the full service gas stations like that especially when it is cold or raining outside for the day, where that i can just pull up to the pump and tell the attendant how much gas that i would like. but most of the gas stations around here where that i live are the self service kind thou. and my Aunt and Uncle live in Oregon, and where that they live, they have all full service gas stations only. isn't that nice? so i do not know if Oregon is the only State that is like that or not that has the full service gas stations like that they have there. take care and have a beautiful afternoon.
@Humbug25 (12540)

Hi ya TnWoman Yeah that is definatley the time when you want someone to fill your car up when it is raining or is cold and don't you just miss it not having your windscreen cleaned for you without having to move a muscle? LOL Thanks Tn

I don't see hardly any gas stations anymore where someone pumps your gas for you. I know where I live and the towns around me there are no gas stations where they pump your gas. I think it would be really nice to have that service again. Exspecially in the winter Then we wouldn't have to freeze while filling up our tanks!

Self-service or manned? Here in Manila, majority of the gas stations, if not all, does have service crew or what we locally call them as the "gasoline boys". They accomplish everything to meet the demands of their customers. From filling up your car, cleaning your windshield, giving you the change off your payment and even putting air in your tires. I know many of you would prefer this kind of service where all of your needs are being literally done for you. But in my case, I would rather go for the self service system. I know this may sound a little odd but the reason why I prefer the former is because I have noticed a number of flaws in having these so-called gasoline boys. First, you have to have a small bill in your wallet or some coins to serve as a tip for their service. And secondly, when there's a lot of motorists having their cars filled up all at the same time, the crew are all busy doing their stuff with the rest of the customers and all you can do is wait patiently for your turn to be served. Unlike when there's no crew, you can immediately do your thing without waiting for someone to attend to you. And the last thing I've noticed in manned gas stations is the level of descrimination in terms of social status. I have observed that the service crew always attends first to those people having sports car or a luxury sedan, or those with the big and bulky SUV's which definitely requires a lot of gas. They can be so ridiculous at times but you just have to put up with them for your car to be filled fairly!

All the service stations I've been to in MANY years are all self-service. That means you pump your own gas, wash your own windshield and never have to meet the attendant if you pay by gas card, or don't get a receipt. When they first went to this here in the US, I was reluctant to even pump my gas. I made sure my husband got the car filled with gas. But, after doing it once, I've never minded it since. In fact, I like the ability to drive up, fill up, and drive off!

Hello Barb42 I think it is a little bit daunting the first time you ever fill up your car but once you have done it you wonder what you were worried about! Thanks Barb

well, i think that changed in all the world, because in my country changed too. I think that 10 years ago, there were at any gas station thouse man that would fill up your car and you would pay him. I was nice. Now, sometimes i get dirty from the gas station. It`s not quite nice, but we can`t do anything to make them come back. Even if they put paper in gas station, to use it when you are dirty, it`s not so nice, because the gas smell will still remain. I really miss thouse guys.

Hi there delkar I don't think back then they were all that quick especially when my dad paid by credit card, but people didn't seem to be in such a rush in those days as they are now! Thanks for your response
