maybe I figure-out what nigenh is trying to say. I also encountered that when I was using free antivirus versions and as I know that time my computer has no viruses present since the antivirus I was using that time detects no viruses when I was downloading files from the net or from my flash drive. But one day, I was using my computer then suddenly it got shutdown. I powered-on again my computer and run scan but the antivirus detects no viruses. After exactly 5 mins, as I observed, the system shuts down automatically. So I begin to have an idea that it was a virus on my computer, since if it is a hardware failure, most likely it has no timer with exacy 5 mins. So I have tried to ask help from a friend and mentioned that I was using a free antivirus. Then he said, I must never trust a free antivirus because most of them only detects few viruses, so what is the use of your full version or pro version of the antivirus you are using, if they have no such difference. So he lend me a hand. He borrowed my hard drive, scanned it on his computer with his full version of antivirus, and you what. His antivirus have cleared-out hundreds of viruses, infected files, and few trojan/worms on my hard drive. And the only difference of the antivirus on our computer?, he's got the pro version and I use the free version. So from now then, I use a pro version of antivirus. I just also use this opportunity to inform for those who don't know since I that time, I end up formatting my hard drive because although the viruses are removed, my other system files have lost because they were infected.

timhinyy is somehow right, the antiviruses are all using same principles on scanning, virus detection, and updates. But on the other hand antiviruses differs on other aspects like the scan speed, their detection accuracy, frequency of updates, platform used, and many more.

Hi Zion007,
Currently, I am using the free version of AVG from Grisoft.
It is one of the best, I think, for free anti-virus programs.
I have been using it for years and it is... okay. Give me a better free one and I might switch.

I am using norton 2007 antivirus with 10 years subscription. However i don't consider Norton to be best but still was attracted towards the 10 year plan and so i installed it.The only problem with norton is,,it decreases the speed. But if you have more RAM capacity,,its ok to have Norton as anti-virus..!!

Right now there's still one month's worth of Windows Live OneCare installed in my computer, so I don't have that much of a problem.
I prefer using Kaspersky more than anything else.

I use nod32, I would say its the best in the industry when it comes to chucking out virus & running without consuming much of resource. Apart from nod32 I would suggest kaspersky & mcafee. Rest all craps because I have literally used every AV's & know how one works.

I used Avast! one year ago. It's a good antivirus software and its personal edition is totally free. But sometimes the rules are too strict and some of my files were deleted as "viruses". so i uninstalled it and then tried NOD32. this is the best antivirus software i've used. A number of my classmates are using it too.
