Where are the "Soaps" going these days?

Since I've been home (Now a stay at home mom) I've been watching soap opera's. This has been a "family" thing for my mother watched them when I was younger, and her mother watched them before her. I use to love the days when us kids would stay home sick and mom would always make these bowls of soup that we would sit down on the couch with and watch her "shows". No I never truly understood what was going on because I was a whole 7/8 years old but it was that mom & daughter time that made me feel so much better.
Here I am years later watching the same soaps my mom watched during that 12:30 - 3:00 bracket. (Young & The Restless/Bold & The Beautiful/Guiding Light) Its almost amazing how much these shows have not changed. It feels as if I could take years away from watching them and when I return to them I feel as if I am picking up where I left off. I more so am bothered by some of the storylines on these shows that what once use to have somewhat of a good story line. Now you have mothers sleeping with everyone in the family, having kids with everyone in the family, sleeping with the daughters husbands, etc. The particular show I speak of is Bold & The Beautiful. I seriously want to write to someone on the who creates these sickening story lines and ask them to add some additional characters.
I know many will probably look at this and think to yourself well you could always change the channel. I could, you're right. My problem is there isn't much on tv that catches my attention during this time. I get tired of watching the same old cooking show repeats on Food Network, and I definately need my break from watching the wonderful repeat shows on Noggin. My daughter absolutely loves watching those shows, but that is also one network I would like to call up and say hey please stop playing repeats and create some new stories. I can just about repeat all the words, songs and commercials they play on there. But, at times there can be some catchy storylines on there that make you want to watch the next day's show to find out what happens.
I know a lot of people enjoy watching others go through "tough" times to make themselves feel better about their own hard times, but seriously... I couldn't imagine sleeping with my fiance's brother or father. Where are they getting this material from to begin with? I couldn't imagine sitting down today with my daughter watching these shows like I once did with my mom because I don't want to encourage her or any other child for that matter that its okay to jump from one family member to the next...

I also loved the soaps of years past. There were such good story lines filled with adventure and intrigue and, of course, romance. Now its just like fictional Jerry Springer. What finally made me turn the things off is just exactly what you are saying. I did not want that going into my mind or my daughter's mind. My sisters have pretty much given up also. One storyline really bugged my sister and she has asked me the same question you are asking because she works at home and gets bored with what is on.
I also know what you mean by watching kids shows over and over again. A lot of times for a nice time together with the family, I like to pop in an old movie. I have found $5 DVDs at Walmart that are good. You have to dig through the box but sooner or later I seem to always find a good one. I found the "Adventures of Robin Hood" 39 episodes in black and white that played on TV in the 50's or the 60's. That took several days to watch and we really had fun talking about it. That's just one example. PBS usually has something interesting on now and then. I sometimes go to the Hallmark channel, ABC Family, WGN, HGTV, etc. Last night I watched old westerns on I think movieplex. I have not seen Maverick, Cheyenne, or Gene Auntry in years. I also like going to the library and checking out movies, something old and sappy. Our library loans some for free for a week. If all else fails go to U-Tube and look up your favorite story line from the past. Be careful though, you could spend hours there and not be aware of time passing.
