Well i always thought you make an appointment and thats that. Not my doctors office. My little boy has had a nasty cough for the past few days and i have been giving him coughing medicine. It wasnt working too well. Last night i was at work and my mom called and said i might want to take him on to his doctor today because his tonsils were swollen. When i got there to pick him up they were and he had little room to swallow. not to mention he wouldnt and couldnt eat or drink cause his throut hurt to swallow(how ever you spell it!)I get up this morning and he is coughing his little head off and his tonsils are huge. he is wheezing and rattling in the chest. So i call his ped and the receptionist says that all the doctors are booked up for the next few weeks and if the nurse thought it was important enough then they would TRY to fit him somewhere. OKAY EXCUSE ME? What am i supposed to do, book an appointment for my child to be sick? I finally got him in with a nearby doctor and he has asthmetic bronchitis with very swollen tonsils. he has 4 prescriptions and it aint fun! Have you ever had a hard time getting an appointment with your childs doctor when he or she is sick?

That's a shame what your doctor did to you, but I'm glad you got him seen anyways. I've never had a problem getting my child into the doctor when needed, but our problem is that we owe our pediatrician some money. Actually, it was copays and added fees our insurance wouldn't pay. They didn't tell us we owed any money until it had gotten up to $400. So now anytime I want to bring them in I have to pay our copays and fees as well as an extra payment for our past due balance. As you can imagine that is difficult to afford. There was a time a few months ago I went to see my doctor about an earache. They thought there was a tear in my eardrum, so referred me to a specialist. They called the specialist, and the specialist was going to schedule the appointment and get back to me. A couple weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying that my appointment was for 2 months out! By the time I got this letter my earache had gone away! I called and yelled at the receptionist, but she didn't seem to care. I ended up cancelling the appointment.

Yeah, I keep having to switch pediatricians for that reason. I keep meaning to switch again, I just haven't gotten around to getting the medical records released yet. I hate when they do that! My OB did it to me too when I was preggers with my last child. They waited until the bill was $200 to tell me I'd had fees for each blood draw and sono. Then I said "Well had you told me that I probably would have refused some of it!". Well they didn't like me saying that. They ended up dropping me as a patient right after the baby was born so I had to go elsewhere for my 6 week check up! And that ear problem, yeah, that totally aggravated me! I could have had serious damage to my ear, and could have lost my hearing in that ear!! It didn't seem to bother them!

oh no they dont like their wrongs to be pointed out. thats one of my main reasons im tring so hard to get that billing position but nothing yet. i would let people know. you know i want to know if i owe. and i think some of the stuff they do in ob offices is not necessary but they make you think it is then charge you an arm and a leg for it. geesh.

Yeah, I know how it is. Fortunatly the pediatricion my children have now will usually try to get them in that same day or the next. If he can't fit my children in he will advise me to take them to the ER. If he says that I have to go over a couple of towns to take them to an ER that has a special children's unit, because the local ER has put my children on hold over less serious issues. Once when my son was 2 months old I took him to the regular ER because he had a fever of 105 degrees F. I rushed him in, they gave him some tylonal and made me wait for 6 hours in a tiny waiting room because my children were bothers the old people that were there for sprained wrists. I was pissed! Finally I asked them how much longer I was going to have to wait. (by this time my son was crying and coughing up a storm!) And they said at the rate they were going it would be another 6 hours and the next morning before he got seen. I had enough. I made them hand over the tylonal, signed my son out of the ER (they had processed him as a patient, just not had a doctor check him out yet) and went home for a very sleepless night. My oldest had to stay home from school the next day because we were up so late at the ER I knew it wouldn't be fair to send a dog tired child to school! The next morning I got up and called my pediatrition and told him what happened. He was like 'can you be here in 5 minutes?' I said 'watch me!' I threw the children in the car and rushed to his office. My 2 month old had pre pnemonia and was able to get on antibiotics right then. Thank goodness my doctor saw him when he did. And that ER is the one that grates my nerves the most!

what?!! that is ridiculous. seriously. i think places like that should be shut down or have better service. that is serious and especially with a 105 fever. im glad your little one is better. i wouldnt have moved either not one inch. sick children especially ones with such high fever should be seen first regardless of a broke wrist. if you would have been behind me in line yesterday with your child sick like that, i would have insisted you went first. my son was not running fever so it could have waited a few min. god these places tick me off big time.

Well, I must say that I'm glad it's over! Haha, and we do learn out lessons with stuff like that. I'm also glad that your son is doing better. Being a mom can be a major pain in the butt when you have to advocate for your child against people that don't seem to get how serious it is. We know our children best. It's time the doctors and nurses got it thru their thick heads, huh?

Well if I couldnt get one I'd either talk him to a walkin clinic, or the emergency room. Usually I call Ask A Nurse and they'll tell me by the symptoms how soon he should be seen and then I'll decide from that point. =) Hope he feels better! =)

really? i cant do that here. if i call for advise on anything they tell me that they are not permitted to give me any info over the phone that i have to come in. i understand it on some things but some stuff they could be more helpful on i think. its good you can do that. he dont act real sick which he has a high tolerance that scares me too. thank you.

Our pediatricians are often overbooked with the well baby checkups and therefore there is no room for a sick child to be seen in a timely matter (usually next week). In this case, I also call the nurse hotline and the nurse on call will give a timeframe to have your child seen due to the symptoms/info that you provide. Depending on that information I will go to either the Urgent Care (walk in clinic for overflow patients) or to the ER. I use the ER as the absolute last resort though. I would love to see an improvement in the healthcare scheduling areas, but with the economy I am sure they will consolidate more clinics to save money which will cause a bigger problem. Always remember to check with your insurance and the nurse hotline to cover your end so you don't end up with a huge ER bill that you are responsible for. Hope he is feeling better soon!

Usually if the receptionist knows the child is sick and needs to be seen it has been my experience that they make room for him to be seen. If they don't I make tracks for another doctor whoose office policies are such they show me they have some compassion and should be in the business of taking care of our youth. Those that do have my child's back as it were. Those that don't need to be thrown out of the mix.

exactly right. this receptionist told me that it was up to the nurse to decide if it was important enough for him to be seen. i thought was ludicris. but i dont think people like that should work with children either.

Generally our office will squeeze them in if it is during appointment hours, even if not with his doctor they will schedule with another doctor if it is that serious. We also have an urgent care in our clinic that is open until 8pm and sees all walk ins. Then there is the emergency room, a bit more costly, but for a sick child I've done that. Poor little guy though. I hope he has a speedy recovery! Namaste-Anora

all of the doctors in the ped unit was booked. i get so frustrated cause i dont plan for him to get sick. but i did get into a family doctor that we may start using instead of a ped. she was great and he really liked her. thank you i do to . the worst part so far is getting him to take his meds. he says "yuk mommy!" lol. its not funny tho.

We still use a syringe to give meds here, so we aim for the back of the throat and try to avoid the taste buds. I know how frustrating it can be, it's why I like that they have an urgent care connected with our clinic. I mean, kids get sick. Namaste-Anora

ethansmommy06 I can relate to your frustrations, especially since he really needed to get in asap, glad you were able to find another doctor near by without having to use the emergency room. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon. Good job mommie on being persistent they are our babies and there is no price tag on their health. 2yolysempowering

Hi ethansmommy I understand your feelings. It is really very paining to note that you can't get the doctors appointment when you are really in need of it. In our country there is no such problem. There are plenty of doctors and specialist doctors are available. So there are many corporate hospitals, government hospitals, private clinics etc..As there are more doctors and private clinics, there is no problem to get a doctor. No prior appointment is necessary when you go to a doctor in his private clinic. Wish your son a quick recovery. Happy mylotting

I was lucky enough to have a pediatrician who made exceptions for sickness. I'd call and they would say bring 'em in. We usually got seen within the hour. The bad side of it was you had to take whatever doctor could see you. There's this one Dr. Tickles (seriously, that was her name) who is the most unpleasant person I have ever met. She's rude to the parents and acts like she knows your kid better than you do. Can't stand her. My son's pediatrician is Dr. Wise and he's almost kid size himself but he's gentle and genuinely takes an interest in not only your child but issues you may have as a parent.

the point is that there should not have to be an exception for sick kids. we dont plan on them getting sick. and i refuse to see a rude doctor. ill straigt walk out. my sons ped is a kid like guy too real sweet guy and takes time also for any questions and stuff. just hard to get in when my son is sick.

Not at all difficult to make an appointment with a doctor in my city. We have severala general hospitals. They open 24 hours. Why didn't you try to take him to the public hospital? Isn't it possible?

We used to have that issue with our Pediatrician. His office felt like maintaining well baby check up and stuff was more important than seeing a sick child. His office was walk in type deal for sick babies, and had to be there at 8 am, and you may be seen with in the first hour or you could sit all day long and still not be seen. That is not how you handle business. We stopped using their office after the first time this happened to us, so we found us a family doctor for our family, and he handles everything from minor cuts, colds to serious things. Best Change we made!
