I found out at 36 weeks pregnant that my son would have spina bifida. I had a home birth and then he went into a special care baby unit. The day he was born he had an operation to close the hole in his back. At two weeks old he had another operation to put a shunt into his head. He came home a week later and had to sleep on his side. I dressed him in dungarees so they wouldn't rub his back. He has physiotherapy done at home with me every day for his weak leg and he goes to see a physiotherapist every three weeks. He must have catheter care day and night. He goes to a playgroup for special needs children twice a week. My son is a happy little 21 month old boy with a bright smile. I need to move to a house with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom. He needs a large store cupboard for his future special needs chair that will have leg support and a future standing frame. He has gaiters to wear when his weak leg is able to.
