If you had any doubts about the state of the economy look no further than wal-mart. When they begin closing the doors is it a sign that we are in real trouble? In the state where I live a Wal-Mart store of 35 years announced today that they would be closing the store in the next two months. In addition they are closing several of the Sams Club wharehouse outlets in Canada. Is this a sign that it really is getting bad?

WOW! That's a shocker, I hope that the grassroots movement can limit Dorkbama's reign of terror to just four years, its going to take years to undo his stupid welfare plan. I'm not participating in this "recession" I buy what I need with cash, not credit and I don't extend myself past what I can owe. Pretty soon banks are going to start calling in debts of common folk and then there is going to be a revolution. We will get through this, its just a matter of trust in ourselves to do it.

Nice to see you fiddle player. I know what you mean we hardly ever buy anything on credit. Cash for most of the stuff we have to have and if not we do without it. I have been reading up a little more on the closings and it seems it is run of the mill stuff. Wal-Mart stock is staying strong so I guess there is not much to worry about on that end yet.
By the way mister do you have any late articles? LOl Later dude!

I work for Wal-mart but I don't know about other stores being closed. Mine opened in Jan of 08 and we are doing great on sales. I'm kind of glad I work there then other retail establishments. I feel stable.
Do you have another Wal-mart in the area though? I know where I live, we have several with in our city and then several in the outlining towns. In one county that is somewhat small, we have 4 Wal-marts. One of which opened last fall.

This particular Wal-Mart was in a small town. The closest one to them is about 30 miles away. The sad thing is this was a major contributor to that towns economy. It happens and I am sure the company is looking out for their own survival just seems to me it is a sign of the times we are living in at least somewhat.

Wal-Mart is one of the biggest stores around. It's shocking to see that one is closing. There are two in the town I work in, and it seems like they're doing alright. I guess it's going to be different from area to area.

Yeah the one in my home town is doing well too. The one that closed was in a small rural area.

I think you will find that on a year to year basis Walmart has always opened and closed stores. I know from working there that we are busier than ever (people who would never shop there are now having to). They have hired and fired seasonally every year I've been there and nothing has changed on that front either. They run a very tight ship and will weather this storm I have no doubt (if you look at their share price compared to the market it seems investors think so too) and they are one of the few retailers posting year on year sales increases ....... maybe they could teach the rest something.

As I have researched further it seems that you are spot on. Hopefully they can lead by example and maybe even show other businesses a way out of the mess we are in.

This may or may not be a sign of the economy. Walmart has had a history of closings in the past. This had nothing to do with the economy, rather it has been about strategic tax break moves. In other words, they would come to a small town that would offer them tax breaks. These tax breaks usually had a time limit of a few years. When the break ended, they would often simply build a new store in the next town that offered them a break. It was actually cheaper for them to just rebuild and rehire than to stay. There was a Pbs special about this a few years back. It was especially happening in the state of california.

Very possible the store had been in the town for 35 years so I am betting it was at the most a small supercenter. The tax breaks could be all there is to it, but I know stuff like this makes you wonder.

oh my god ! Walmart is closing ! No more than a week ago i checked the top 500 and i saw WalMart was on the top list , No.1 in fact. It started a campain to sell goods at very low price, big discount. But how? how come? I'd better check the WalMart in my city, china. Thank you for this piece of info.

This is just one of many stores they have. Dont worry too much I am sure that as a whole the company is still doing very well. But you have to wonder if even Walmart is feeling the pinch then times must be getting really rough.

I think it is a sign of the times. Everyone is suffering and alot of people can't spend like they used to so they aren't shopping as much and therefor places are closing. I know here in Dallas they opened up this new place close to downtown for people to hang out after the hockey and basketball games. It had nice restaurants, and stores but they all closed down.

I think it's a sign that every cloud has a silver lining.
But then again, they have this really stupid policy of competing with other Wal-Marts, despite being the same company, so that if you work in one Wal-Mart, you can lose your job and thus your house and car because the customers shop at a different Wal-Mart.

Wow I did not hear of any wal-marts closing but yes it is a big sign that we are in trouble with the economy then. Wal-mart and K-mart and other places like those are usually the last to go because of the fact that they get tons of customers. But where I live at one of our wal-marts just opened about 6 years ago, they seem to be doing good in sales. But who knows they could get as bad as your wal-mart that they too will shut down. Only time can tell. I knew that we were in a really bad state of frame but did not think it was that bad to shut down some wal-marts. Well I can only hope that things gets better soon.

I haven't heard of any Wal-mart store closings, but I knwo that the Wal-mart here has closed the fabric department. I have heard of them laying-off some workers though. Do I think that this indicates the problems with the economy, well, just as much as some of the other closings. ere, where I live, the Armour-Eckrich factory is closing its doors in July. That one surprised me beacuse they are known for hotdogs and bacon, both very common foods.

Many companies are closing their doors. It is a sad state we find ourselves in that is for sure. Some of our companies are shutting down one day per week to hold down costs. I guess that is better than the alternative.

It could be since they believe that they are the only retail establishment worth shopping at. I say we petition against wally world and start shopping at smaller places where they appreciate their workers and those companies can grown into success instead of closing their doors at the sight of a Walmart. Thank you.

I think it is a bad sign if not a terrible one. Wal-mart is closing some of the stores in China too. I work in a small town where wal-mart planned to set up a big shopping center. But now they are still there with only the sign board that reads "Wal-mart".

That's a shock. The Walmart (where I live) is usually pretty busy. The same with Sams Club also. I try to buy my dvd's at Walmart since it's inexpensive =)
