Why Do So Many People Prefer Pop (Soda), Juice, And Other Drinks Over Water?

The other day my husband commented that he drinks more water, now that we are able to be together in the same country (I live in Canada, and he worked in the States for a while, now he's up here with me). He observed that my drinking water sure saved a lot of money on things like juice, pop, even alcoholic beverages. I do like an alcoholic drink now and then, but when I am thirsty I only drink water. If I drink anything else, I drink it for the taste, but water is the only thing I want when I am thirsty. Why do some people like less nutritious drinks so much?

The answer is simple. Water is no doubt the best drink, however, it has no taste. People like drinking something with flavor and it seems sweet drinks are much more popular. I remember when I was a child, I didn't like water at all. I preferred to drink soda water, soup or juice. I needed some flavor drink. It's a bad habit. I get rid of it and today I tend to drink more water.

Because people like me prefer drinks that is good to taste. Water has no taste, even people know is the natural and healthy way, still people get blind to that idea. For instance, i know that water cleans my body toxic away, it helps in my digestion, but whenever i am eating or thirsty i always like softdrinks. People will only stop drinking when they already have kidney problems and other related disease. i hope i can stop thinking of soft drinks when im eating. I will tell my mind " water, water, water!.
happy mylotting.

many people prefer soda over water because when you add water you wont get that fizz, which looks very refreshing, but people don't understand that soda is not good for health...

I am one of the ones that just do not like the taste of water. I am trying to drink it now and let my 3 year old grand daughter see me drink it because I want her to drink water. I am aware that it is very good for the body but I just do not like it. I don't know why. I prefer a coca-cola classic. Or if I can't get that then I will drink a pepsi cola. It has to be one of those or I will do without.

hi danish canadian,
Water is best drink for health everyone knows...I do like soda pop now and then but don't drink it on a regular basis. When i am thirsty the only thing that quenches my thirst is water. but it has to be cold water. Here in New Delhi we have the coldest best tasting water of anywhere i have been. So im lucky in that aspect. Eve in the summer the tap water is still cold. Like it just came out of the fridge. And if it is not cold enough i put ice in it.

That's true. It just seems that Water has the reputation of being a boring cheap drink. when I say I'd like water, people always say "are you sure? We have..... etc." I am not trying to be modest, I just LIKE WATER! I am very sure.

You are right, water is the best thirst quencher, especially during hot season. Others prefer or choose to drink juices, soda and other drinks over water maybe because of the taste that they like on those drinks which water do not have. I also drink some juice or soda when I am eating something that needs those drinks to compliment what I am eating, which water alone wont do. Afterwards I also drink water.

I drink either water or orange juice. I know soda is not good for our body. My mom loves to drink coke that's why she has diabetes now.

The reason I know why is probably because it's sweet and it tastes good. Water is tastelss and other people would just drink it when they are very thirsty and there's no other option.[/b]

Hello there danishcanadian!
I am the type of person who actually can drink a drum of water on a daily basis. Of course, I was just exaggerating.
I drink more than a liter of water on a daily basis. During schooldays wherein I talk a lot, I need to drink a lot. I try to do away with soda or even juice.
I have two co-teachers who do not like water. One says that the water does not have any flavor so she does not want it. Well, I know they drink water but not as much as most of us do.

I guess it's because sodas tastes good, and has the caffeine. But you are right, I really should drink more water.

i love drinking ice cold water but there are certain food that goes well with soda like burger or pizza. it seems the satisfaction is not complete if those food is paired with water. :)

I used to love soda and sweet tea, I couldn't get enough of it but then I started drinking water and now it's really all I drink except milk on my cereal and a daily glass of juice. Now I drink water all the time...I keep it in the fridge so it's nice and cold too.

because thats the way they start off and it becomes a habit. sugar raises insulin levels in the body making people more hungry. i never use to drink water but now i drink alot of water. My water drinking just slowly developed over time and didn't really make a commitment to doing it.

1) they taste good and 2) they're habit forming and 3) people don't believe bad things will happen to them

In a word, sugar. All those drinks contain some amount of some fofrm of sugar. Water can be boring and sometimes it can be nasty. The water in Slidell has sulfur in it and smells like rotten eggs. I remember going to the Dairy Queen there when I was a kid and regretting it. Even the taste of some bottled waters is horrible. Also, when you're truly dehydrated, water alone isn't enough so you need something like orange juice because it has potassium.
