My son slept without a diaper last night

For the very first time and had no accidents!
Most mornings he does wake up dry, he's gotten really good at holding it. But I was going to leave a diaper on him until we moved, just in case. Because in this house, his bedroom is on the 2nd floor, the bathroom is on the first floor, and there are a few babygates in the way.
But last night when I was getting him ready for bed, I discovered I'd run out of his diapers. Well I'm not about to go buy diapers when I really don't need them, so I sent him to bed in underwear, and he was fine!
He's 2 and a half now... turns 3 in June, and he's officially done with diapers!!
How old was your child when they no longer needed a diaper at all?

My son had just turned three when I finally said enough is enough, you are wearing underwear. He had 3 accidents after that before he was fully trained.
My daughter just turned 2 last month. She is one of those kids that knows when she needs to go, but is really stubborn and it has to be on her terms when she goes. She will go the whole morning telling me when she needs to go and running in the bathroom, but by afternoon she refuses to go.

My son is still having the occasional accident, mostly he's not "pushing it down" properly, so it sort of shoots forward and gets on his pants. The other day he had a nasty #2 accident in his pants, but it was all liquidy and I can't really blame him for it, because you know how those liquidy #2's like to sneek up on you. For the most part though he's doing wonderfully and has thus far been my easiest potty trainer! He gets really upset with himself when he has an accident, so I make sure not to scold him much for it.

That is great news! I don't remember how old my son was exactly when he went to bed in underpants, but we kept him in pullups for a while. And then he went through a bedwetting phase when I was tempted to put him back in pullups! But I didn't want to go backward so we just made sure we had a waterproof mattress pad on the bed. I still use those mattress pads but he is blessedly dry. He ought to be at age 6 (and has been for years), but remembering those nights I had to get up and change the sheets keeps me grateful for him being dry!
Don't be too concerned if your little guy backslides here and there. With any luck he won't, but if he does it's just part of the process. Cheers!

Each of my other kids have reverted a bit at one point in their lives. Usually around the the age of 5. My twins are still having some difficulties, and they're 6, but it was torture trying to train them. They weren't trained until they were 3 and half, and still had problems for months and months after that!

My oldest was probably right around that age when she was done with them. She was potty trained at 2 but then a walmart automatic toilet went off under her butt and she refused to go on the toilet anywhere but home for weeks. My second daughter was harder to train. She didn't seem ready or willing till she was almost 3. We still put a pull up on her at night and she'll be 4 in 2 weeks. She is a stubborn little thing and won't get up to go to the bathroom if she has to go. So it is just safer to put a pull up on her right now even though most nights she is still dry. My youngest will be 2 in July so I guess we'll start potty training then.

Wow, just about every response I've written to you lately seems to include congratulations! I guess there ones are for your son though, not you! Congratulations :-)
I've just started potty training with my son again and we're having some success. He'll 'go' with his Dad, but not with me at the moment.
