I booked a ticket today for my boyfriend's Easter trip. I found a cheap flight for him and it saves us a lot. I was surprised that I have to pay for the seat reservation and what surprised me more was that the check in baggage is not for free. I dont know if its good since the hand carry luggage is free of charge So I ask my boyfriend that he should carry a hand in luggage only. Do you find it strange? As far as I know check in luggage is free of maximum of 20kilos.

It all depends on the airline I guess. But regularly, check in baggage has a limit and if you don't exceed the limit then it should be free. Maybe the reason why the flight that you paid for was cheap was because of the hidden charges such as having to pay for check in baggage :P
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

For most airline companies it is 20kg and for airbuses I know the maximum is 15kg. Paying for check in luggage? It is really new to me ... LOL ... For the reservation I have encountered that but it is for online booking and you will also have an option not to reserve a seat and just choose when you are to check in.

I think it depends on the airline and the price of the ticket. Some ticket prices are reduced by making certain things optional extras. They really should have pointed that out when you booked.
Check the conditions carefully on the airline's website (not necessarily the site you booked on) and, if in doubt, call them for clarification.

Budget airlines in Europe now charge for check in baggage. One of these I traveled to Riga in Latvia with my toddler son last year. We had a choice of paying for one, two or three check in bags but the cost went up the more bags I took. The allowance was only 15kg so I decided on one bag. I had my son's pushchair carried free and I had to pay extra to check in my son's light weight travel cot. The ticket price looks cheap until airport tax is added. Then paying extra for check in baggage must come as a surprise for most travelers. This year we went to South Africa on a good quality airline and the check in baggage was 23kg for me and 10kg for my son and for free. I find budget airlines have strange ideas and I heard one of them is thinking of having a coin operated door for the on board bathroom. They are just after more money and that is understandable in a recession with some airlines having already stopped trading. I hope that you and your boyfriend will have a lovely trip.

The limit to luggage various drastically between europe and america. I wonder if their fare is equally different to justify the gap. Maybe, it has more to do with the way to start the business and the way of thinking and culture as a whole. I wonder whether the US airliners are following.
