I was upset today

I was upset today because my dear cats was out on there travels while we was at church, and when we came back they brought us a present a wild rabbit that they had killed, for the second time this week. I know we live in the country, but it really upsets me. The children got a bit upset too, killing Mr and Mrs fluffy. My husband he would have nothing said about the cats, says, oh thats what cats do, they go and hunt. It neally caused an argument between us because he couldn't see the harm in it, but my argument was, our cats are not feral cats, they are well fed and don't need to go and kill. It upsets me when they kill beauiful birds too. Don't get me wrong I do love my cats, but my lovely golden Labrador never seems to be a lot of trouble, but he is mummys little baby. Do any of your animals cause you any trouble?

I used to get really upset when our cats brought in their takeaways! As you said they are well fed and want for nothing! They are loved, pampered and never go without, they get a varied diet, dry and wet foods, so they are not hungry, yes I agree it's nature to some point, but, as you rightfully said they are NOT feral, so they shouldn't need to hunt. Trouble is they don't hunt to eat, they hunt for fun which is even sadder. The cats would torment, tease the poor animal playing with it and the poor creature more often than not has a heart attack, is it any wonder! It's cruel. I used to collect frogs! The cats would always bring in frogs, half alive and I would rescue the poor frogs, I couldn't let them go out the back, because they'd only be caught again or worst still killed! I adore frogs they are fascinating creature, I would take them in the car and drive to the nearest lake and set them free, bless them. That is the downside of living near the country you do get all the animals, voles, mice, my cats never caught a rabbit before, I have to admit that is very unusual! Fortunately they never brought any birds back, it was always frogs and mice!

Hi Wolfie, I love frogs too, I use to collect cuddly toys and anything to do with frogs, lovely little things. Funny enough the cats never touched the frogs, we had a couple of toads who use to sit by the front door, but the cats didn't go near them, but they have had moles and all sorts. Thanks for your reply

They are animals after all. They still have that cat instinct in them. And they think that you are their mother so they want to show you how well they can take care of themselves. I do not know how cats think, but I would assume that they see the feral cats outside, just the way teenagers see other teenagers or adults see other adults working and to them, hunting rabbits, mice, or whatever is work for them. So it is not about food, it is about status. Just pat the cats, and thank them. Dogs are different, they stay around and protect people. Cats are independent. Oh and cats eat birds. It is their nature.

You should have seen me when my cat brought in a mouse. And I hate mice. I guess I do not know what would happen if he had brought in a rabbit. There were no wild rabbits in the area, and I would have not liked if my kitty came in with one of the tame rabbits some neighbor was raising.

hey amanda ,dont be upset yaar we cant help it,I know we love our pets very much and feed them on time ,and when they do such things it really hurts but you cant do anything in this, after all they are animals and cant have feelings like us,any ways dont be upset and try to train them to eat the food you give to them and not to killl other innocent animals

I have one cat who for most of the time is pretty useless at hunting - she has occasionally caught a bird, which I find very upsetting, but most of the time thank goodness she is too slow. The other cat catches rabbits continuously for about 6 months of the year - it's horrible. If I can stop him, I do, but usually it's too late. I love all the wild animals and birds, and for this reason I will never get any more cats -you can't make them stop, it's their instinct.

I had the same problem several years ago with a cat I used to have and someone actually told me that to a cat, they will do this as their own way of showing affection. If out in the wild, to take care of themselves and their kittens, they have to kill to sustain themselves. So they're doing the same thing for you by saying, "Hey look, I love you and brought you food.". It didn't make sense to me at first either, but the more I thought about it, the more it did as it isn't a whole lot different than having a husband go deer hunting so he can bring the venison home to his family. After realizing this it didn't bother me as much when they would catch the occasional mouse around the house, but when I let my cat outside, it was only for a very short time and on a leash (he was an indoor cat anyway). It took some getting used to at first, but then it got to the point where he was always in a hurry to come back in after he had done his "playing" for the day. That and I'm sure our cold Michigan winters had something to do with it. LOL!
