Getting fired because of Facebook. Have you been ranting?

It may come as a surprise but there was a news at CNN online today about a girl who got fired because she was ranting about how she hates her job at facebook. Anyhow, that's not the topic I'd like to talk about. I'd like to ask how many of you have been ranting online about how crappy your job is, how much you'd like to leave and all? I know there are many dissatisfied people out there but do you think it's good to rant all of these out online? We could actually be bad mouthing our companies or the employers who are actually paying for our bread & butter, aren't we? Anyhow, have you been ranting online? if so, why do you choose to rant online instead of talking about it to your bosses? (Of course you would be fired if you actually did so) but isn't it the same thing? Don't you think ranting online gives it the possibility for your company heads, etc. to read about them as well?

Well, I don't have any rants about my job. I like my job. The only problem with my job is some of the people I have to work with every day. They seem mature, but then they act like children. I have no patience for this type of behavior. Like, does it seem normal for an adult woman in her fifties to make demands of my work and then when she doesn't get what she wants, she quits, but she is always back on Monday? To my way of thinking, if you quit, you no longer work there. Plain and simple. I don't understand why they don't just tell her not to come back. Period.

Whoah.. I'm also puzzled that she quits and is still able to return there on Monday and they accept her? That's really odd.

Yes, it is odd. How can you come back on Monday after you made a big scene, quit and stomped out on a friday? This happens at least once a month.

sometimes i think it is easier to let your frustrations out online... let it go.. it is harder to approach a boss and say...this is my problem... sometimes it is hard to approach your boss for anything so i guess it all depends ont he company you work for

Perhaps it's easier IF you're certain that you could not name names and could not be known by the other person. Yes, it's difficult to talk to the boss, but it's more difficult to explain when they get to see it in black and white with your own words and name. I guess we could rant, just as long as we could remember not to let them know it's us and it's them we are talking about.

People should just make their myspace/facebook private & then they can rant all they want... I would never rant on my myspace about something that could cost me or my husband our jobs, unless it was privare & I didn't have any co-workers as friends on my myspace... I think people should be more careful because so many people are checking the facebook/myspace out before hiring & even doing it with their current workers. My advice... be careful what you put out there....

I would definitely no rant online. Because it could be taken against you in the end. I think there are plenty of places and venues where you could do that but the net is not a good place since they could be sniff by your IT and would end up in HR which just means your end to your current career. Well if you really want out quite first before you complain.

True, it's too easy get fired because of what you say online because they'll have proof of it.

Hi laydee, I am not working this time but if ever I will be, I will rather discuss it with my family and close friends, to avoid people reading my deepest frustrations about my job if ever I am joining sites like that which displayed my real name...LOL! I've been working in the past and for my comments, I always share it with someone I trusted a lot....SOmetimes, I address it to my boss but there is limitations because I don't like also to lose my job!

I guess this is the main reason why people should be discreet with their lives here online. They shouldn't be confident enough to post their real names, their photos, and add their bosses or employers on their list! hahaha.. if they're not really happy with their jobs. I mean, everyone does have rants about their day, but I guess it won't help at all if your boss gets to see it.

I never do this online, even if i am dissatisfied i keep it to me or my close friends only not to everyone and i think this is not good to do online. well, if you are not satisfied with your job leave it but be loyal towards your company. At the end of the day you are earning your bread and butter from it......

It is one thing to rant about your job it is another thing to be the victim of a crime... As a Whistle Blower, there is a certain matter that has yet to be dealt with, and it takes so long for the wheels of the system to turn... I like what I do and the people I work with and the customers I work for. I do not like that I had to lose my marriage, my church membership and nearly my job as a result of following proper procedure so that I could be violated by law enforcement and the courts.

I would rant about my job but I would never mention it online, its too risky especially nowadays. It has the possibility indeed, no doubt. It could be almost be the same thing but that chances are a bit slimmer being caught if you ranted about your job online... Right now, I dont hate my job but I do not love my job as well. I just have to work for my family so that we can have food on the table everyday.

well i don't rant about my job... i did that once though in my first job... it's not like they were gonna get to read it or anything since i didn't name names or they'd never know it was me... haha. =) so there, i did it only once. it's not really nice to rant about your job online especially if they know where you work and if they also know you own that blog or something. =)

I think ranting online is not a good thing. The world is not big, we are all somehow related in this web of communication. So it is not possible to hide things online once posted from the eyes of other people. So I think this is not a good idea. If one is not pleased with his/her job, he/she needs to complain about this to the boss and actions shall be taken to improve the working conditions of the employee as its the employee's rights.

I think its completely normal for people to be dissatisfied with there job at one point or another, after all dont we just have a horrible day and go home and go urgh i hate my job....not meaning it of course....however going on line and ranting about it or saying how horrible the company you work for is not a good thing. If you really think that then maybe its time to find a new job! The only time i rant about my job online is if i had a bad day, and its not so much im ranting about the company its just that i had a bad day.

ranting your job or your employees online is like unethical.. why? it's like you dont have enough courage to tell to the one right one who is supposed to and if you know that your'e on the right track, why dont you direct it to them.. and online ranting is a public view.. anyone can view and read it.. especially if this is a private problem or issue, you should not post it online.. it will also affect the reputation of the company or the the one affected to it.. so it should be done private.. :))

i prefer to talk to my boss immediately rather than rantin my complaints online...i don't think that ranting online can give any solution regarding my complaints..instead of making a nuisance out of it, i prefer to just go directly to my superior face to face, tell him what the problem is, for us to be able to solve our differences...if he listens then good if not then it's his loss.

For me it is just the same.If you are ranting online many people will know about your complaints and the company your working with will be affected. It is better for you to talk with your boss wherein the problem will just be with the two of you.IF you really afraid of firing you in the job then don't rant online instead talk to your boss and ask for help. You want to show online your complaints because you cannot say it in personal but then you have to be ready with the results of what you did.

If You're a member of a forum that will let you rant on any subject, then fair enough, knock yourself out...But I don't think it's appropriate when it's out there for public viewing to be naming names and "putting the boot in" to your Boss or the company You work for, especially if You have internet access at work and use your downtime to update your pages or profile! (I don't know if this Girl was doing this at work or not..just saying..) I hear that companies now will look into your online presence to see what kind of an employee you'd be for them...and using "Stumble upon" I saw a site telling you how to clean up any online activity You'd rather an Employer or potential one didn't see...

yes there is a possibility that they will be able to read our ranting and so it is important to make sure that where we post our rant are not the place they visit. but i think it is really much safer to do it online that directly say it to our bosses cause they will surely fire us if you expressed your dissatisfaction

I found this news hilarious. Funny, that it put a smile in to my face. My online world is different from my real world. I don't have difficulty separating the two. So far, I don't have any reason to rant on anything about my on line activities. I'm doing fine.

I used to write in my online journal from work ALL the time when I had a day job. I think that if you're ranting, then you have to keep those entries from eyes that you don't trust and even then, you never know when someone you did trust decides to turn on you in the online world. Best advice ... rant all you want in your paper journal at home or lock the entry so that people you don't want to see it ... won't.

Honestly, I have been ranting. And I would feel bad if my boss saw it, but it's really not the bosses fault. I'm just unhappy and that's not something I should be ashmed of. I agree that it's probably not a good idea to rant online about hating a job, but where else can someone complain and get more than one response?
