We're being hit with a major snowstorm here in the Big Apple..and you know it's bad when the news officially announces that ALL NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED....I don't even remember the last time that has happened here..like years and years We all seem to be experiencing wacky weather here in the US...a lot of southern states are being hit by major storms too...snowstorms that is...almost unheard of. Anyway...wherever you live...if the weather is really bad...do you have schools close down? Other institutions? Mmmm..wonder if there will even be any mail deliveries?? Or deliveries in general. Glad I stocked up on food and stuff...think I'll stay home too, and sleep late...uh, no..haven't even been to bed yet...restless...and even my cats are going nuts...LOL..think they are being affected by the wacky weather

I saw this on the news today and being a New Yorker myself, though now I live in the South, I said the same thing. You know it's bad when New York shuts down. I remember we were walking to school in blizzards back in the 90's in the Bronx. In fact I often tell people down here about it when they close down our public schools for an inch of snow flurries! It must've been something if they shut down the schools today! Wow I miss NY!!!

I had a friend from back home (NY) tell me he thought it didn't snow hard enough for the schools to shut down. He grew up with me and we both remember trekking to school in the snow in the 90's. Things are changing I guess.

We here in minnesota our pretty used to snow storms so it takes blizzard like conditions or like 50 below zero temps before our schools will close down.

A MAJOR blizzard usually is what it takes. Schools close early or start late is about it. Unless like 1991 when we got 48 inches in a 24 hour span that is. That major storm shut down Minneapolis even. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM DADDY !!~

Damn. Not only am I NOT in New York, I don't go to school either, so I couldn't have lucked out more on the day off front if I tried! I remember many years ago in Australia where schools shut down for over a week because of temperatures that ran 45 degrees celcius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) and above for 8 or 9 days or so. It was unbeliveably hot and people were dropping like flies everywhere! It kinda makes you realize how inisignificant we really are in the overall scheme of things when you see Mother Nature shutting whole cities down like this!

Yikes I've heard how hot it gets in Australia...I definitely could never take weather that hot..not a hot weather fan to begin with. Well talk about wacky weather though....we had that blizzard....now six days later we had a temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit..figure that one out

Yup, it's that bad here. Any major snowstorm seems to put good old New York City to a screeching halt. Kind of nice though, as it tends to be quieter and more peaceful...LOL

that is really bad weather. but i don't have any idea how bad a snow really is in real life cause i have not seen any snow but i have seen one on the news though. it pretty looks scary though what i see on the news. but before i really love to see snow one day. but i guess still like to but i don't look forward to snow this strong. anyways, so you say that your cats are getting restless. guess they can't get out of your home and just stay there at home always.

Here in Australia there are only limited areas that have snowfall, and that is only during Winter. I am not aware of anything being closed down due to cold weather. We have recently had school closures due to bushfires and way back when I was in school, we got sent home once because it was over 40 degrees celcius.

I feel sorry for the parents who have to go to work and can't find babysitters.

Well today was my day off from work, but I had to pick the grandkids up at school, and pick up my paycheck at work, then off for fun shopping. It snowed pretty much all day here ( I'm in Troy NY, right next to Albany), but all in all the roads were not to bad, the city was really good with the plows, so the drive was pretty good. I really thought we were past all this snow for the season.

Hi pyewacket! Oh my, I hope that everything is alright with you at this time and so with the people in New York too. I have a friend who lives in New York. She has two children who are going to school there. I hope the children will be alright. We also have major storms, very strong typhoons and it always destroys many houses and plantations in most areas here. Being used to this kind of calamities, each local government have taken measures to cushion the blow and private organizations help the government too in helping the people affected. Take care and be safe! lovelots..faith

With the sudden change in the weather conditions every one is being affected by the same. It is really great that kids are being affected by the weather but this affect must be positive for them as they must be enjoying this break.

See! I knew it all along. The school district here is paranoid. I'm telling you, if the snow flurries just a little on the mountain top here they will close the schools. We haven't had snow that stuck to the ground at my house for more than a couple of hours, and the snow on the mountaintop only stuck to the ground where there was ground. I mean it didn't stick to the roads at all, but the schools have closed here about 10 days total so far and let out early about three times.

I heard it was pretty bad. I live in NY, but I'm in California now in college. But, it has to be a pretty big storm if all the city schools are closed. But what about like Buffalo, you need to be in like the north pole for that place to shut down.

My cats are just super cuddly today. We are not getting the extreme temperatures or the snow. Even when we do, we almost never close the schools. It just is not done. Last year they did close the little school I was working as well as several others, because of ice storms. As it was, the school was closed maybe one day or perhaps two. They opened back up even when the town still only had half of its power. The thought was that kids needed to be in a familiar place, even if they could not be in their home. I am restless today, though.

Here in Northern Colorado, this week it will be in the 70s! We haven't really had much of a winter. I am actually going to need to water my lawn because it is so dry.

In Arkansas, if it even thinks about snowing they close the schools. They just aren't equipped to deal with the snow, plus a lot of people live in the mountains--Hard to get in and out. Where I live now, it would have to flood to close things down I think. I haven't ever heard of schools closing here. Although, my friends and I took the day off from Graduate school one day because our office flooded because of the rain. Some drain backed up and we got rainwater and sewage in our office. Glad all my stuff was off the floor. It was nasty. We were relocated because of the health hazard and things stayed crazy for a week.

no weather bad enough to miss any work/school this year - one day they opened late, but I hit the road at my normal time (9ish) and it was fine.

Wow seems like you have got some bad weather on the way then. We have had pretty calm weather in UK and it even started to warm up a bit too, but this week it has been forecast to turn colder with wintry weather on the way so not impressed about that as I had saved quite a lot in gas the past couple of weeks and will have to put it back in now hehe!!
