I have a medical background and I would really love to get into medical transcription at home, but I don't know how to get into this field. I surfed the web and found some companies that recruit people from home, but I don't know which to go with. Some offer to train along with software downloads for a price(I can't afford). Did anyone want to point me in the right direction? Or at least a away to get started. Thanks

Unfortunately I dont really know, but maybe you could do a search on your computer, and then you might be able to find some information sites on how to get started with that, but I dont know a lot about medical transcription, but hopfully some of the other mylotters may have some better tips for you.

I don't want to discourage you, but let me tell you my story. I am an R.N., and decided to do medical transcription. I saw where there was a small MT business where I live that was looking for people to train and work for them. It costs money, but they told me I would never be without work. I did this thing for 9 months. The people were very hard to work with, and when they decided I was ready to do it at home by myself, they were not available to support me when I had questions related to the work. I had a lot of problems and finally quit because I was not able to do the job the clients expected without support from the one that had "trained" me. I want you to know up front that if you learn this way, and do not have a certification from a good school with two years of actually doing medical transcription, it is very hard to get hired. If I remember correctly, Career Step medical transcription course is linked to several places who hire those who have completed this course. I did not choose to go this route because I had already spent a good bit of money on the failed attempt. Also, be aware that you probably won't make good money doing this until you have maybe 5 years of work under your belt.

You should not pay anyone money for home transcription. There are lots of fakes sites that promises work and ask for low fees or registration fees. I think you should go to some companies near your home or place and try to get work from there. I would suggest you go and get medical transcription training from these companies.

I have recently trained to do medical transcription and I have found out the most information on it from this site: http://forum.mtstars.com/ A lot of experienced transcriptionists are members there and if you join the forum(it's free) you can find out anything you want to know about medical transcription.

Why don't you call around to all the different doctors offices in your town/city. Ask if they need extra help done with reports and things. You could even do up a short cover letter setting out your experience/qualifications and attach a copy of your resume. State in your cover letter that you are looking for dictation to do at home. Generally, specialists need more reports done than general practitioners. I think you would have more luck going in person to actually meet the doctors, etc. than just looking for work online. I don't know of any doctors that would just send their dictation off into cyberspace and hope it comes back done properly.
