Definitely like the way the question is posed. Is it about “ethics”? It's 2015 and Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) is in the spotlight. But ... suppose Bruce didn't have to become Caitlyn. Suppose the operation was just a suggestion. I mean ... his "condition" wasn't killing him. Was it? Since the suggestion is doable ... Jenner convinces himself that transgender surgery is the cure for what was ailing him. For the medical profession, is his transformation a triumph? A medical procedure that can really benefit those who need it? OR a translation? Translation into cash money. Jenner has celebrity status. Don't know how much the operation cost but for sure it wasn't cheap! Insert the question of ethics here. - Celebrities have influence because some folks worship them like their gods. If a celebrity decides to do something … well then it must be right! So now, ordinary folks will follow the example. Ripple effect of the increase in the number of people or rather "sufferers" now opting for transgender surgery equals … Ka-ching! Does the person really need the operation? Who cares? Unethical doctors only see dollars!

@pauliek - Can't point out the difference but do wonder WHY, since we already have the word “hermaphrodite” and we know what they are (people with both male and female genitals) … WHY did another word or description of that malady or deformity or abnormality (?) have to be invented or changed to “transgender”? So? Transgender must be something else! (???) I'm guessing. Don't know what Bruce Jenner was, other than an Olympic champion who managed to father some good-looking kids before he decided that he needed to be changed into his real self. With all the publicity and stories surrounding him, don't recall anybody ever mentioning that he was a hermaphrodite. Seems like it would be a key fact to present for clarification. But I didn't really keep up with all the brew ha ha. Sorry. Can't answer you.

Despite Jenner allegedly having these feelings he still married three times and produced six children. I just don't get it.

Whether I agree with the transgender ops or not, my thoughts on the actual ethics of it are that if it truly is a help to the person, then it is ethical. Whether or not it is actually depends on many many factors, for instance is the person transitioning because of perceived physical and mental health reasons? Is the medical team performing the surgery ethically or for money alone? Too many factors in each individual case, so I feel the question is multi faceted.

i disagree with gender reassignment.. i personally believe that God has made you what you are for a reason. But honestly, I am completely ignorant of what a transgendered person feels concerning his/her gender, or what that person has to go through feeling that shouldve been in a different body. They themselves are struggling about their gender in the first place. so i am definitely speaking in the moral side of the question nothing personal.

Ethical or not? That's a good question and it depends on what the ethics are that doctors are to follow.
